Goodbye, Ionian Grill

The popular Ionian Grill is closing its doors after a short one-year stint on the Iona College meal plan and nearly two years of service in the New Rochelle community. However, there may be a chance it’s not for good.

The decision went into effect Sept. 1. Owners Christos and Polixeni Katechis stated that the tough decision to close was made with finances in mind. The owners invested a great deal of time, hard work, and money into the restaurant and they were not generating an adequate return on the investment. “It’s a seven days a week, thirteen hours a day job,” said (Polly) Katechis.

Establishing the business involved completely renovating an abandoned building. From the décor to the food, the creation of the Ionian Grill was a labor of love. The pleasant atmosphere combined with the high quality food made the restaurant quite a hit with the New Rochelle community, offering a unique dining option unrivaled in the area.

“With so many pizzerias and other fast food here, we are one of the only different options. Our customers keep coming back because we have high quality foods that are prepared right in front of you,” said Katechis.

Many Iona students preferred eating there because of the array of healthy dining options offered. Katechis said that it was a popular spot for this reason, especially for Iona’s health-conscious athletes.

“I liked that they had a lot of vegetarian options,” said senior Jennifer Dillon.

The owners, as well as the Iona community, are sad to see the restaurant go. Citing both the great food as well as the welcoming atmosphere, students expressed their opinions on the decision to close.

Senior Sheila Kearney said, “I’m disappointed that it’s closing because they have really good food. You can always count on it being good.”

Dillion agrees. “It was a great place for groups of friends to meet; it was never too crowded,” she said. “The owners were also always really nice. They take the time out to get to know you and are always welcoming and helpful.”

However, this might not be the end for the Ionian Grill. The owners say that there are prospective buyers lined up who may decide to step in and take over. “I would like to see someone come in and buy this place so that all of our hard work won’t go to waste,” said Katechis.

This outcome is something many students would be eager to see in light of losing the popular dining spot.

“I would be happy if someone took over because there are not many diverse options for food around campus. It’s nice to have variety,” said Kearney. “I’d probably go there if it stays similar because I liked the Ionian.”

If the sale goes through, the restaurant is expected to maintain the same Mediterranean theme of the Ionian, but operate under new management and perhaps see some changes that will bring new life to the struggling business.
