Iona alum is million dollar man

Iona graduate Julian Etwaroo might be having trouble finding a job but in June, this average kid from the Bronx got a late graduation gift.

He sat in shock as he checked and re-checked the small piece of paper he had in his hand with the numbers that were engraved into his mind: “ 3, 7, 12, 13, 18, 20.”

The recent graduate held in his hand a lottery ticket that had just won him $5.3 million. Like most lottery playing hopefuls, Etwaroo had been playing the same numbers for the past year and had been buying his tickets at the same store.

He opted for the lump sum and walked home with $2.1 million.

The New York Post reported his reaction, stating he “was happy I got the money.”

He continually said that he just feels good and is happy—just as anyone would be, especially a financially unstable college grad that was just handed the largest unexpected paycheck of his life to date.

While anyone would be happy to walk away with that much money, the way people choose to use it would definitely vary.

The most popular responses on the Iona campus to the question ‘how would you spend the money?’ were to use it to pay off college or even help with grad school, just as Etwaroo plans.

The lucky Iona graduate said he plans to spend some of the winnings on a graduate degree.

“I’ll see how it goes when it happens,” he said.

The new millionaire immediately told his family but chose to keep it a secret from most of his friends.

Next time you’re at Deli Mart and trying to decide whether to play the lottery or not, remember it can happen to anyone, even one of the Gaels.

Just as The New York Lottery slogan states, “Hey, You Never Know.”
