‘Popular Song’ video promotes unpopular choices

Ariana Grande, known for her role as Cat in the Nickelodeon series “Victorious,” and Mika, a British singer and songwriter, teamed up and recorded their “Popular Song” last April which is known as an Anti-Bullying Anthem.

The song, which the two singers created into a music video, discusses bullying among teens. The music video displays characters bullying both Mika and Grande. It shows them tormenting the singers, shoving their faces in a toilet or ignoring them in the hallways.

During the video, the two singers get together and discuss throwing some sort of dinner party, with a twist. Rather than having friends or family, the two invite their bullies to the party. Near the end of the video, you see the two singers and their bullies gathered around the table, laughing and enjoying the party. Suddenly, the dinner guests begin to turn to stone, and simultaneously, the three victims smash the stone statues to pieces, using their plates and cutlery. Grande then turns to Mika, and a flashback is shown where as a kid, Mika smashed Grande’s creation when she was playing with blocks. Mika then turns to stone and Grande smashes him to pieces.

Some see the video as a bad representation of what to do when you are bullied. Critics say that rather than getting revenge on bullies, one should seek help and assistance from friends, family and teachers. Rather than making issues worse and taking them into your own hands, you can seek help and find a safe resolution to the problem.

Although the two singers definitely meant well with their song and video, one should seek a different solution when dealing with bullies.
