The Harry Potter fandom exploded with excitement when J.K. Rowling and Warner Brothers revealed on Sept. 12 that they will be producing a series of movies based on the fictional Hogwarts textbook, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” by Newt Scamander. Rowling will be writing the scripts for the films.

In terms of content, the Huffington Post cited Rowling who said, “Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards…[the film] is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the ‘Harry Potter’ series, but an extension of the Wizarding World.”

Regardless, the Harry Potter community seems thrilled to have the opportunity to explore another aspect of their beloved series and fictional world.

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” will focus on Newt Scamander, the author of the fictional book, and his story.

“The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, 70 years before Harry’s gets underway,” said Rowling.

It seems unclear at this point exactly where the story line of the film series will go, but “The Hollywood Insider” suggests that the movie might show Scamander’s research and writing of “Fantastic Beasts,” or how he got the assignment to write the book.

Producer on the “Harry Potter” films David Heyman said in an article on ComingSoon.net that the specifics couldn’t be revealed yet. “All I can say is that it’s great,” he said. “[Rowling] had no need to go back to this universe or world. That she’s doing it means that it’s going to be very, very special.”

The question remains, two years after the release of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two,” how did all of this come about? According to Imagine Games Network, Warner Brothers first approached Rowling with the idea, but she was hesitant to go along with it.

However, Rowling soon considered and she said, “An idea took shape that I couldn’t dislodge. That is how I ended up pitching my own idea for a film to Warner Bros.”

As soon as this news surfaced, social media blew up with fever and talk about the upcoming film. Evanna Lynch, who played Luna Lovegood in the original Potter series, tweeted with furious enthusiasm.

In one post, she wrote, “This feels like having gotten over an ex & then they resurface in ur life & ALL THE FEELINGS COME RIGHT BACK & YOU LOVE IT #FantasticBeasts.”

Needless to say, fans are thrilled by the news, especially those Gaels who are Harry Potter fanatics.

“I think it is really exciting that the Wizarding World is going to continue, since it is something that our generation grew up with,” said junior Brigid McGlynn.
