‘Scandal’ continues to surprise viewers

ABC’s hit show “Scandal” shocked viewers this Halloween with the biggest twist of the season to date. Fans of Fitz and Olivia were hit hard in “More Cattle, Less Bull” when they learned that President Fitz may be responsible for the death of Olivia’s mother.

When asked about the show’s plot twist, junior Ashley Bresnahan thought it was riveting. “My eyes were glued to the TV. I kept jumping at everything!” she said.

Bresnahan is a particular fan of Kerry Washington as Olivia Pope. “She’s a perfect character,” she said.

For those Gaels who aren’t familiar with the show, “Scandal” follows the life of Olivia Pope, a lawyer who has become Washington D.C.’s premiere fixer. If the nation’s elite have a crisis, Pope is there to help. Creator Shonda Rhimes complicates life further for her characters when it revealed that Olivia is having affair with Fitzgerald Grant, the president of the United States.

Fitz and Olivia have faced more than their fair share of problems over the past two seasons, including an assassination attempt on the president and First Lady Millicent Grant leaking Olivia’s name to the press as the mistress of the president.

Currently “Scandal” is in its third season, and the story remains true to its title. While Olivia deals with the backlash from the world learning of her affair with the president, the first lady has her own secretive political agenda and Fitz is preparing to campaign for reelection. No matter what Olivia does she can’t seem to cut the ties to her past life with the president.

In “More Cattle, Less Bull,” Rhimes adds another dimension of struggle to the already rocky relationship between Olivia and the White House residents.

First, the first lady, Mellie, lures Olivia into a one-on-one where she asks her to come back to the White House and run Fitz’s reelection campaign.

“He’s not alive, he can’t breathe when you’re not here. He needs you, so I need you. Come back to us,” the First Lady begs of her in this episode.

Of course, the plot twists do not end there, and Olivia’s associates uncover the alarming possibility that Fitz ordered a plane carrying more than 300 passengers, including Olivia’s mother, to be shot down over Iceland. The episode concluded with the men poised to break the cruel news to Olivia.

Senior Cate Monigan agrees with Bresnahan’s enthusiastic endorsement of the show. When asked about the episode she said, “When she walked into that room and it was the president’s wife I thought someone was going to die!”

“I think [“Scandal”] is a captivating drama that hasn’t been done before. It’s nice to see something different on TV,” said Monigan.

“Scandal” airs Thursdays on ABC at 10 pm.
