Swimming and diving struggles against Seton Hall

The Iona College men and women’s swimming and diving team hosted Seton Hall on Nov. 13 for a non-conference meet.

The Pirates claimed both contests, winning on the women’s side 181-108 and 166-119 on the men’s side.

Iona sophomore Alicia Raffle placed third in two different events. In the three meter diving competition, she posted a score of 163.80, and in the one meter diving competition, she earned a total of 176.30.

The relay team of senior Maria Skeivys, senior Kerri-Anne Dodenhoff, senior Sophia Hyokyvaara and freshman Kathryn Nevin placed second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:51:05. Nevin also took third with a time of 2:33:79 in the 200 breaststroke.

In the 100 backstroke, two Gaels finished in the top three. Skeivys won with a time of 1:00:68, and sophomore Mary Ellen Mangione finished in third, less than three seconds behind Skeivys. Iona also had two of the top three in the 50 freestyle. Nevin finished second with a time of 25.73 and sophomore Melissa Dorsch took third place with a time of 25.82.

Senior Brigitte Doughty completed the 200 freestyle in 1:58:44 and was the runner-up.

In the 100 yard breaststroke, Dodenhoff claimed first with a time of 1:07:60, while Mangione finished in third with a time of 1:10:19.

Doughty won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:17:23, while Mangione finished third with a time of 5:26:05. Doughty also won the 200 IM with a time of 2:13:22. Hyokyvaara came in with a time of 2:24:50, claiming second place.

In the 200 freestyle relay, the Maroon & Gold claimed the top two spots. Nevin, Dorsch, freshman Natalie Bowman and Mangione won the race with a time of 1:41:52. Dodenhoff, Doughty, sophomore Alexa Caravella and freshman Maria Lopez came in 2.5 seconds behind their teammates.

On the men’s side, freshman Keegan Boisson-Yates finished the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:48.94 and took second, while classmate Matt Rothman came in third with a time of 1:51.27. Freshman Bryan Veals rounded out the top five with a time of 1:51.70.

In the 100 yard backstroke race, freshman Joseph Sheilds was the runner-up and had a final time of 1:03.79 while senior Ryan Bacci placed behind him with a time of 1:05.91.

Senior Justin Grigull won the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 22.42, while freshman Matt Rothman finished third, only three-tenths of a second behind his teammate.

Boisson-Yates took first in the 100 yard freestyle by posting a time of 48.74. Senior Tyler Elfert placed second with a time of 48.84.

Grigull placed first in the 500 yard freestyle, with a time of 4:47.28; sophomore Scott Martin came in third.

In the 200 yard IM, Iona had the top three finishers. Freshman Collin Purrman won with a time of 2:00.41. Veals finished the race in 2:04.63, and sophomore Brandon Hadhazy finished only nine-hundredths of a second behind him.

Both Gael squads will be back in action for the Loyola Invitational on Dec. 6, 7 and 8 in Baltimore, Md.
