AMAs impress audiences

This year the highly anticipated 41st Annual American Music Awards took place Nov. 24 on ABC. Pitbull, or Mr. Worldwide to some, is known for his singing and dynamic presence which made him the perfect host of the awards.

The opening performance was a serene spectacle by Katy Perry singing “Unconditionally,” a touching song. The Asian setting gave the implication that Perry was a Geisha who was completely devoted to a guy fighting off his insecurities. Viewers were able to relate to the song and its lyrics.

One performance that went above and beyond was by America’s Favorite Alternative Rock Artist, “Imagine Dragons.” It was one that took one’s breath away and made you wanted to jump out of your seat and sing along.

During their performance the group showed their versatile side; whether they were singing, dancing or playing different instruments. They engaged the audience with high and low unexpected intervals. Their performance was the highlight of the night that was not to be missed.

If “Imagine Dragons” wasn’t America’s favorite performance of the night then it was undoubtedly Lady GaGa and R. Kelly’s singing “Do What U Want.” It was just provocative enough where it made audiences gasp but still had them wanting more. Her vocals and dance moves had the audience craving more and cheering her on.

It was also a big night for Rihanna, who took home the Icon Award for her influence in the music industry and social networking with more than 32 million followers on Twitter and more than 10 million on Instagram. It was especially touching when Rihanna’s mother came out to present her with the award. Her mother expressed just how proud she was of Rihanna and all that she has accomplished. Rihanna also walked away with Favorite Female Soul/ R&B Award, her third time in this category and seventh AMA overall.

The biggest announcement of the night was the Artist of the Year. This kept everyone on their toes. The candidates this year were Bruno Mars, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake and Taylor Swift. The competition was swept away by Taylor Swift winning for the third time in this category. She has walked away with a total of 14 AMA awards throughout her music career thus far.

Overall, the night was one of excitement and great achievements from various genres of artists.
