‘Veronica Mars’ makes a comeback with movie and web-series

The once one-hour drama series “Veronica Mars” was canceled in 2007 due to an unsuccessful third season despite a cult following. The lack of closure created unrest amongst fans everywhere as well as the cast themselves.

This unrest led to a campaign on Kickstarter last March where fans donated their own money to get a “Mars” movie up and running. $5.7 million was the end result and “Veronica Mars: The Movie” will be premiering March 14 in theaters.

However, this was only the first blessing to be bestowed upon the series. The second was the news of a web series. The campaign on Kickstarter was so newsworthy that it launched “Veronica Mars” back into the spotlight, making sure everyone, fan or not, knew of its existence.

Its record funding of $2 million in less than ten hours was the series’ pivotal point. With this immense amount of hype and impending release of the movie, creator Rob Thomas took the opportunity to go even further with his creation. The show’s final season had premiered on the CW, making it their home channel. Naturally the web series will premiere on CW Seed (formally called the CW Digital Studios).

Few details have been released about the upcoming series but The Hollywood Reporter released, “The project will likely consist of six to eight ten-minute segments.” Information was then released that the segments wouldn’t focus on Kristen Bell or her character Veronica, but instead party boy Dick Casablancas (portrayed by Ryan Hansen) will take the spotlight.

For someone who has never watched the series, Casablancas was best friends with Logan Echolls (Veronica’s on again/off again boyfriend played by Jason Dohring) and was more often than not at odds with the teenage sleuth. However, he quickly took the role of the “jokester” in the series, providing signature comic relief.

Rob Thomas tweeted concerning the project: “The CW web series: a comedy featuring @HiRyanHansen attempting to put together a Dick Casablancas spin-off of #VeronicaMars. No date yet.”

When there was some confusion about exactly whom Hansen was portraying, Thomas released another tweet, saying: “Ryan as version of Ryan trying to put together a Dick Casablancas series.” With these details it’s safe to say it’s not exactly the spinoff “Mars” fans had been hoping for yet it has still provided immense hype and excitement. Besides, any fan of a canceled TV show would have to agree that anything is better than nothing.

CW President Mark Pedowitz released the news of the series at the Television Critics Association Press Tour.

“Rob and I spoke last night,” Pedowitz said.

“He’s very excited about doing this for CW Seed. It may not appear before the film comes out….I have great faith in Rob that he will deliver something fantastic and should it ever turn into a TV series again, hopefully he’ll think about us.”

While the series may focus on Hansen, that doesn’t mean other prominent “Mars” actors and actresses won’t be featured.

While nothing has been promised, it would be hard to believe that Bell or other cast members like Dohring, Enrico Colantoni, Percy Dags III, Francis Capra and Tina Majorino won’t make an appearance.

One could also look to Thomas’ STARZ series “Party Down,” which had Hansen as a main character and featured numerous “Mars” alumni as guest stars, Bell included.

More news will undoubtedly be released with the upcoming premiere of the movie. The series’ hope for success hangs inevitably on its past popularity.
