Artists celebrate music’s biggest night

The 56th annual Grammy Awards aired on Jan. 26 on CBS. With great hit singles débuting this past year, many viewers tuned in to watch the performances and winners of 2014.

LL Cool J hosted the show for the second consecutive year, making the show run smoothly through all the different performances and presenters.

The power duo of music, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, opened the show with a sexy number off of Beyoncé’s self-titled CD.

Queen B and her hubby took the stage singing “Drunk in Love,” leaving the audience wanting more. The Carters not only had a successful opening to the show, but Jay-Z took a Grammy home for best rap collaboration with Justin Timberlake in “Holy Grail.”

Though the opening to the show set high standards for the rest of the night, artists such as Katy Perry, Lorde and Daft Punk didn’t skip a beat.

Katy Perry’s performance of “Dark Horse” with Juicy J was dark and mystical, with a forest setting and heavy fog. Perry ended her number with a ring of fire and broomsticks.

Another dark performance was from rising star Lorde, as she performed her hit single “Royals.” The 17-year-old star had a breakthrough night, taking home two Grammys for song of the year and best pop solo performance.

Daft Punk also had a successful night, winning four Grammys including record of the year, album of the year and best pop duo/group performance.

This year’s Grammys was filled with unique collaborated performances and reunions.

Chicago and Robin Thicke joined together with a live band as they sang “What Time Is It” transitioning into Thicke’s hit “Blurred Lines.”

Kendrick Lamar and Imagine Dragons also joined together for the first time to sing “Radioactive.” P!nk and Fun.’s Nate Ruess performed “Try” and “Just Give Me a Reason,” as P!nk gave an impressive cirque du solei performance.

One great Grammy moment involved Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr coming together to perform for the first time in years. These two Beatles will be performing together again in next week’s tribute to the iconic group.

Country stars such as Keith Urban, Blake Shelton and upcoming artist Kacey Musgraves performed throughout the show.

Taylor Swift had a head-banging performance during her hit “All Too Well.”

Kacey Musgraves was awarded for Best Country Album.

The most memorable moment of the night was Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ performance of “Same Love.”

Queen Latifah officiated 34 marriages during the performance, which included both gay and straight couples. The stage and walls were set as a chapel.

While Latifah officiated, Madonna made an appearance when she came through the glass doors on the stage to join the song. The couples afterwards walked through the aisle hand-in-hand and all smiles.

The upbeat, intense and heart-warming performances made the award show a fun time, and only made music lovers more excited to see what the 57th Grammys will have to offer.
