Last Sunday, the Academy Awards graced television screens everywhere. Awards were won, speeches were made, and Ellen DeGeneres broke Twitter with her star-studded selfie.

The Academy Awards are supposed to be about the movies made that year and about the actors who wowed us with their performances—but they are never just about the movies. The Academy Awards are always about the incredible gowns and beauty trends on the red carpet.

This year, the celebrities did not disappoint with their red carpet looks. Critics are saying that this was one of the best-dressed Oscars in a while. Hardly anyone was dubbed “worst dressed” during red carpet coverage.

There were some prominent trends, including everything from embellished dresses to capes to dark colors to pastels.

Black dresses are not normally seen on the red carpet of an award show, especially at the Oscars, but many actresses took the classic approach and it worked wonders.

Charlize Theron wore a black Dior gown that wowed everyone who saw her. Pairing it with a silver pendant necklace added just the right amount of sparkle to a regal, elegant look.

Julia Roberts and Emma Watson also chose to wear black gowns for the occasion. Roberts donned a Givenchy lace peplum gown while Watson wore a silver and black Vera Wang dress.

Black is definitely in once again. This might set a precedent for future award shows where more celebrities will leave color at home in exchange for the classic black look.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the red carpet was also filled with pastels and embellished dresses.

Camila Alves made us turn a shade of pink in a blush, caped Gabriela Cadena gown. The big winner of the night Cate Blanchett wore a nude Armani gown encrusted with Swarovski crystals.

Blanchett wasn’t the only one with a bedazzled gown either; Angelina Jolie shone brightly in a long sleeved, silver beaded Ellie Saab gown.

Plain, simple colors like red and navy blue wowed onlookers as well. Jennifer Lawrence wore a gorgeous, simple red dress with a hint of a peplum. Amy Adams and Sandra Bullock chose navy blue dresses that were also simple yet stunning.

The one starlet who was the talk of the red carpet and the ceremony itself was Best Actress winner, Lupita Nyong’o. She wore a gorgeous, pale blue Prada princess gown and matched it with a gold and diamond Fred Leighton headband—an accessory that will surely be popping up more frequently.

Aside from fashion, the beauty looks on the red carpet were also on point. There were two different trends that rose above the rest: deep, dark make-up or very light, natural make-up.

Kerry Washington, Margot Robbie and Naomi Watts opted for darker eye make-up and a deep-colored lip, whether it was red or purple.

The natural, simple look came into play on Jessica Biel, Olivia Wilde and Cate Blanchett where they wore natural faces with a plain, beige lip.

Side-swept hair made appearances on stars like Sandra Bullock and Kate Hudson whose side parted locks allowed them to showcase their dresses’ styles. If the hair wasn’t side-swept, it was pulled slickly back, shown on Amy Adams and Charlize Theron.

While the Oscars are always a competition amongst the stars, this year, there was no short list of winners in the best-dressed category.
