New iPhones boast increased quality and size

Apple’s new iPhone has gotten bigger, but is it better?

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were made available for pre-order Sept. 12.

“I’m going to get the iPhone 6 Plus. It’s bigger; it has more applications to it,” said junior Daniel Birkholz. “They’re both thin, but I want to get a bigger phone.”

The two models have three key differences between them. The iPhone 6 is $100 cheaper, has a smaller screen (4.7-inch display) and has 10 hours less talk time than the iPhone 6 Plus at only 14 hours.

According to the Apple website, the company is proud to have created its, “…thinnest, most advanced Multi-Touch display.”

The iPhone 6 Plus features a 5.5-inch display, challenging the 5.1-inch display of the Samsung Galaxy S5. The iPhone 6 Plus also has gotten thinner since its 5s predecessor with a depth of 0.28 inches compared to 0.30 inches.

Another feature unique to the iPhone 6 is a new Retina HD display, previously only available on iPads.

The phone comes in gold and silver, and a newly introduced color dubbed “Space Gray,” which is a light gray tone.

The phone is available through AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile. No contract is necessary when the phone is purchased through T-Mobile, but the phone is more expensive at $749.

The phone’s price also increases depending on the storage capacity you desire, with each upgrade in size costing users $100 more. It has a starting memory capacity at 16GB, then 64GB, and finally 128GB, which is the largest amount of gigabytes an iPhone has ever had.

With this new upgrade, Apple is offering its users free apps that will come at a cost to non-iPhone 6 owners. Apps like iMovie and Pages, that normally cost users up to $9.99 per app, will be available for free in the app store.

The biggest advancement is Apple Pay. This allows for you to connect your bank account to your iPhone and make purchases.

“With Apple Pay, instead of using your actual credit and debit card numbers when you add your card, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, and encrypted and stored,” according to Apple.com.

This account number is attached to the purchase, instead of your actual credit card, keeping your account information safe from what seems to be a growing trend of hackers acquiring people’s information from major retailers.

Purchases made through this method scan your fingerprint before the transaction goes through. This method of payment is available at 220,000 stores.

Major companies such as American Express, Bank of America and Chase have already signed on, and Apple’s website promises that it will be partnering with more soon.

So is all this really worth it?

Some Apple users are excited for the two new phones to come out. Others are not as impressed with the hype, and are willing to wait out their contract to upgrade.

“I wouldn’t get it, maybe later when I have an upgrade, but I already have the 5c,” said junior Alex Miller.

Both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have already sold out online despite the fact that the iPhone 5s only came out last September.

While you can still order the new phones online, the Apple website states that the phones will not be shipped for three to four weeks.
