Wear your motivation on your wrist: Fitness trackers

Molly Yetman Staff Writer

A common New Year’s resolution is to lose weight or adopt a healthier lifestyle. However, as the weeks pass by, people lose motivation to complete their resolutions and they tend to plateau by mid-February.

If you find yourself in this position, a new way to stay motivated towards your goals is to utilize a fitness tracker. There are so many brands and options out there, so how can you find the most effective tracker for a reasonable price?

Luckily, you have options. Fitbit is known for its accuracy, variety of products and styles. Fitbit can help organize your daily activity by measuring the distance you’ve traveled, the calories you’ve burned and the frequency, intensity, duration and sleep quality.

One great aspect about Fitbit is their variety of products that contribute different components to fit your specific needs.

The cheapest one you will find on the company’s website is called the Zip Wireless Activity Tracker, which is priced at $59.95. The Zip comes in five different colors and is roughly the size of a quarter.

According to Fitbit.com, “it tracks your steps, distance traveled and calories burned.”

It can sync wirelessly and automatically to a computer or smart phone to track progress to encourage you to work harder, challenge friends and set goals.

It can be attached to your belt, bra or pants pocket, and is water-proof. You can also export your fitness data to other popular apps, including SparkPeople and MapMyFITNESS.

Next is the Flex which is a little more expensive at $99.95. This device does all the things that Zip does, but in addition, it tracks the quality your sleep and can even wake you up quietly in the morning.

It comes in 10 different colors and can be worn around your wrist. The Flex doesn’t have an actual screen; instead it has five LED lights that explain your progress.

If you’re still looking for more features in your fitness tracker, try the Surge. It is priced at $249.95. It contains a GPS, a heart rate tracker, and it records multiple forms of workouts including cross training and cardio.

It has the ability to receive call and text notifications. The battery can last up to seven days, and the machine can sync data wirelessly to your smart phone or computer.

Finally, for your inner fashionista, try the Tory Burch-inspired trackers, starting at $195. They are stylish, metal hinged bracelets that come in gold, silver or rose gold. These are a great way to keep track of your fitness and still look stylish at the same time.

Fitbit also offers a premium membership at $49.99 a year. This plan offers you a Fitbit trainer, analysis of the data it has gathered from you, and can rank your progress against your friends who use the product as well.

Fitbit products vary in price, and ultimately a buyer should figure out exactly what they are looking for in a fitness tracker before making a purchase.

If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to a Fitbit fitness tracker, the Jawbone Up Move sells for $49.99 on Amazon.

It displays your basic information including the amount of steps you take, calories burned and sleep patterns. With this price you do not get all the same technological features, but it is a good alternative to the Fitbit.

Whether you’re getting in shape for spring break or that wedding coming up, keep up with your activity with a fitness tracker.
