Summer guideline for men’s style

Sean Behan Staff Writer

There are countless combinations of styles to choose from in an effort to look good and keep cool during this season.

During warmer seasons, it’s important to pay attention to your choice of shirt, and how it fits you. Making the wrong choice is difficult to get away with now, because you don’t have the layers to hide under that you would in the cooler months.

1. Polos:

You can never go wrong with this classic look, but there are a few things to consider when buying one. The fit, color and material are all things to look for if you’re trying to successfully pull off the look.

To make sure you aren’t sweating through your shirt, cotton is your best bet. You have a variety of choices for colors, ranging from neutrals like white and gray, to bright colors like yellow, blue, green and pink.

Lastly, the slim fit is in and is the ideal fit for any season. Uniqlo, H&M and J. Crew are great places to get quality slim fit polos for a not-too-high price tag.

2. Loose tees:

If you would like to keep it a little less formal, try a loose hanging top. You should look for all of the same qualities as the polo, like material and color, except you can get away with a somewhat looser fit. Again, stores like Uniqlo and H&M are great choices for affordable shirts that still look good.

3. Shorts:

Pants have their place during this time, but for the most part, you are going to want to keep as cool as possible.

Simple chino shorts are the way to go. These can also be found in a variety of colors, and you shouldn’t be afraid to take chances with your look, as long as they match the rest of you outfit.

Land’s End has a great collection of chino shorts.

4. Shoes:

Picking the right shoe will make or break your outfit. If you are in a more formal situation, boat shoes are the classic summer shoe. You spend so much of the day on your feet, you deserve to be able to splurge more on them.

Try Sperry Top-Siders and Ralph Lauren boat shoes in a tan or navy color. They will be slightly more expensive than some other options, but the quality is worth it in this case.

If you want a shoe that will support you while you’re being active, Nike Roshe Runs are the way to go. They are a comfortable, stylish and cost efficient shoe.

They made mostly of mesh, which really allows your feet to breathe, and the quality is unmatched for the price.

Roshe Runs come in dozens of different colors so choose carefully to make sure your shoes will match a larger majority of your outfits.

5. Accessories:

These are a subtle but important part of summer fashion. Items like sunglasses or hats can really enhance your look. There’s nothing wrong with being yet another person wearing Ray-Ban Wayfarers or a fitted baseball cap.

There is a reason that you see so many people wearing these, they are classic items that go with almost all outfits during the warmer months. But as always, explore a little bit and see which styles suit you best.

Summer is the time to try out some new things. Try out those pink shorts or that purple polo that you always wanted to try; just make sure the clothes fit right and are worn with the confidence to pull them off.
