Raise awareness in red lipstick

Sexual Assault Awareness Month is over. However, Red My Lips’ mission of raising awareness of the shame and victim blaming that go along with sexual assault hasn’t ended.

Red My Lips is a global campaign that was founded by Danielle Tansino after she was raped in 2011.

After going through intense emotional trauma, Tansino started the campaign after a female district attorney said that they would not persecute her offender because “jurors don’t like girls that drink.”

During the month of April, Red My Lips encourages both women and men to wear red lipstick in solidarity with those who have been told that they were raped or sexually assaulted because they were wearing “too much makeup” or wore clothes that were “too revealing.”

Red lipstick is often associated with women who dress provocatively, but Red My Lips aims to reclaim red lipstick as an object of power.

Although red lipstick may not seem like the best way to spread awareness about the emotional, mental and judicial aftermath of sexual assaults, wearing a bold lip can bring the attention of others.

Someone who never wears lipstick but then one day wears a bold, cherry-red lipstick will come to the attention of co-workers, classmates and friends.

The goals of Red My Lips can be shared with others by word of mouth, but flyers, Facebook statuses and tweets can also help promote the message.

April may be over, but that doesn’t mean awareness raising has to stop. Wear a red lip and encourage friends and family to do the same.

Want to join in on the campaign but don’t know where to start? The drugstore is a great place to experiment with red lipstick to find the one that is best for you.

Red Velvet from the Wet n Wild Megalast line ($2.29, drugstore.com) is a perfect blue-toned red that will work best on those who are fair or have pink undertones. The blue tones in the lipstick work great to make your teeth look brighter, too.

Those who have yellow undertones will love Revlon Super Lustrous in Rich Girl Red ($4.99, Target) for its orange undertones.

To determine your own undertone, look at the veins on your wrist. If they have a blue cast, you have pink undertones. If they look green, then yellow is your undertone.

If you can’t tell, you have neutral undertones and you can rock any red lip. Of course, just like with all makeup, wear what makes you feel the most confident. Found the perfect red and now want to invest in the best?

These red lipsticks will bring your pout to the next level. MAC Ruby Woo ($16.00; MAC Comestics) is a classic. The velvety matte texture will stay on lips all day, even through speeches on why rape on college campuses needs to be taken more seriously.

Liquid lipsticks are incredibly popular for their longwearing properties and ease of application. Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Outlaw ($20; Sephora) is a dark, true red that will compliment dark skin tones.
