YouTube Red allows users to avoid advertisements

YouTube is offering a $10 subscription service called YouTube Red to give users an enhanced and uninterrupted viewing experience.

Some of these perks in the membership include not seeing ads on the YouTube website or within the YouTube apps on mobile devices and TVs.

This feature does not apply to paid content on YouTube, such as paid channels or TV and movie purchases and rentals.

The service also lets listeners listen to videos on their phones and tablets through speakers or headphones when they have another application open or their screen is locked.

“I think having the ability to listen to music from YouTube while you’re in another app is very convenient,” sophomore Sarah McIlwaine said. “It is especially useful for music videos, where you only want to hear the audio while doing something else.”

The YouTube experience won’t change for people who choose not to become a member. Without a subscription to Red, you can still watch all of the videos and channels you like on the site, free of charge, but you will miss out on the extra features Red offers.

In addition to Youtube Red, Google also introduced the YouTube Music application. The YouTube Music App will serve as a dedicated place to listen to music on YouTube.

The catch is that you will only be able to use these features the app includes if you have a YouTube Red membership. The app will be available later in 2015.

YouTube Red has been met with mixed reviews due to its cost. One of the main features of YouTube Red is its ad-free videos. Users can easily get this feature with the use of adblocker.

According to PageFair and Adobe’s 2015 Global Adblocking Report, there are 198 million adblock users online

An adblocker is a catch-all term for any kind of software or hardware that removes ads from a webpage. For most people, it takes the form of browser extensions such as AdBlock or Adblock Plus, which are nearly effortless to install on Google’s Chrome and Mozilla’s Firefox browsers.

According to the Adblocking report, this number has grown by over 40 percent in the last year, with annual growth rates of 48% in the U.S. and 82% in the U.K.

With the increase use of adblock users, YouTube needed to come up with a way to give users an ad free experience.

“I understand that YouTube makes a lot of revenue from advertisements so they need to have them,” senior P.J. Milianta said. “But I would not use the program because there are a lot of free ware ad blocks for browsers. I understand what YouTube is trying to do but I would not buy it.”

YouTube Red is still in a trial phase, and Google executives are watching closely to see how the new program succeeds and is used by loyal YouTube users.

YouTube Red is available only in the U.S. Interested users can sign up for a free one-month trial.
