Style Spotlight: Simplicity is key

Senior Roger Rojas, originally from Miami, uses New York and its culture as inspiration for his everyday style.

Rojas was used to wearing polos, shorts, flip-flops and Sperry’s in Florida. New York’s weather has transformed his style and now you can find him wearing layers to beat the colder seasons.

His go-to outfit starts with a dark color palette, while making sure his sweater or coat stands out. For instance, his favorite jacket is his maroon pea coat. He pairs it with black oxford shoes, Levi dark wash jeans, a Henley shirt and a beanie.

He also never leaves the house without his watch and two bracelets.

Rojas describes his style as simple, polished and clean.

“Simplicity over superficiality,” he said.

Rojas believes that first impressions always matter because they are what make a person memorable.

However, in one word, he sees a parallel between his style and New York because both are melting pots of various styles.

Rojas is captivated by the beauty of the New York and he appreciates its diversity. For example, one of his favorite places in the City is Soho, where there is a multitude of people who do not dress alike.

He likes to observe the locals in the city and how they dress.

He enjoys reading GQ magazine every once in a while.

Rojas has two style icons: Pharrell Williams and Kanye West. He looks up to them for their uniqueness and creativity.

“Kanye is an innovator,” Rojas said. “He feels that what other people say [about how] you should dress is the opposite.”

This accounts for one of the reasons why Rojas does not particularly enjoy wearing labels on his clothing, nor does he have a particular fashion designer.

“Wear whatever you feel most confident in,” Rojas said.

His favorite pieces of clothing are from thrift stores. His favorite thing about thrifting is the hunt.

He also enjoys shopping at All Saints in New York.

“Style is personality, Rojas said. “No one person dresses the same; everyone is different.”
