Best and worst outfits at the Critics’ Choice Awards

The 21st annual Critic’s Choice Awards had celebrities showcasing some of the best and worst looks on the red carpet.

Best:

Rachel McAdams and Krysten Ritter dazzled in their embellished burgundy gowns. Each of their gowns were embellished with beading and carefully crafted by their designers, Elie Saab and Zuhair Murad.

McAdams’ Saab silhouette gave an illusion of a knight’s chain armor and Ritter’s Murad gown featured a modern v-neckline, giving new meaning to the term Hollywood glam.

Alicia Vikander’s Mary Katrantzou gown featured burgundy colors as well, but had a different type of flair. The detail in Katrantzou’s design could be seen in the main bodice which had hints of sky blue.

“I love the burgundy trend because I feel like it complements a wide range of skin tones and also gives off a radiant vibe,” junior Felushah Badio said.

The luxury fabrics and textiles of some of the gowns embodied the richness of the Italian Renascence. Zoe Kazan wore an Oscar de la Renta gown, accessorizing with a matching blushed clutch.

The unique part about this gown is that it was originally styled with a large belt. The look could have done without that accessory, as it takes away from the stitching and colors in the gown.

Portia Doubleday went for a more daring look with her translucent gown created by Novis. The sheer dress was tastefully made with flower appliqués and managed to distract from her lingerie, which was visible from underneath the gown. She paired her outfit with a navy blue clutch, which matched the navy blue flowers on her gown.

“I love patterns,” senior Jasmyn Plasencia said. “And I love even more how the red carpet is loving them too. The painted floral look not only encapsulates feminity but also elegance, making both looks the best of the evening.”

The men looked sleek and sophisticated in their impeccably tailored suits and tuxedos.

Rami Malek wore a black suit and a crisp white button up. The unique thing about his outfit is how he did not wear a tie. This made the ensemble unique and modern

Two other actors who have never disappointed on the red carpet were Aziz Ansari and Anthony Anderson. They both wore traditional tuxedos, but Anderson accessorized with a pocket square.

Ansari also took a different approach to the typical black and white affair by wearing a navy blue tuxedo.

“They’re sharp and they’re a good fit which is key for formal wear,” said junior Chris Gomez.

Worst:

Damian Lewis normally has a great sense of fashion on the red carpet, but he just wasn’t able to pull off the long tuxedo jacket that ended just above his knees. The other problem with his look was that his pants fit too loosely and should have been tailored to fit more like a skinny jean.

Wes Bentley had a similar problem with his jacket in that it made his torso look wider than it actually was.

“The long coat is too long on Damian and it drowns him out,” junior Kelvin Najarro said. “The double breasted coat on Wes just looks like he tried to be different but it did not look so well once it was actually on him.”

Another astonishing miss was Sarah Paulson’s metallic silver dress by Naeem Khan. The completed look aged her and sleeking back her hair did not help.

Regina King’s figure was lost in her embellished metallic crop top and white high-rise skirt, which was paired with silver heels.

“Sara’s reminds me of something futuristic and tacky from the Disney movie ‘Zenon,’” junior Jenna Ferrante said. “The other outfit Regina is wearing does not seem to match and it looks like something I would put together in like 20 minutes or less.”
