The power of a playlist: The effect music has in college

The power of music is impressive. The way music can so easily impact people speaks volumes on the consequential role it holds in their lives. It influences people and affects their emotions in different ways.

Society has taken advantage of the increased accessibility of music through the online streaming service Spotify and the use of iPhones. This has given people the ability to make music a part of their daily lives. This is especially true for many college students, as some define music as the extra push they need to get through the day.

“I listen to it literally every single day,” freshman Karabrann Williams said. “From the second I wake up I play music as I’m showering and getting everything ready for my day. Music is definitely a help. Uplifting songs can alter my mood.”

Music can improve the way students are feeling and lift their spirits, making them feel ready to tackle the day ahead of them and push through the unexpected obstacles that may present themselves.

This holds true for college students, who often feel engulfed by all of their responsibilities. College life is full of stress and the pressures of everyday life cannot be ignored. Music acts as a comforting source that some students need to remind themselves that they will persevere.

However, music can also be distracting if not used correctly.

“It’s only a hindrance if I’m playing it while trying to read or write,” Williams said. “Then, I can’t focus.”

Though many people love listening to music while getting their work done and feel that it allows them to concentrate more precisely, it may act as a distraction for others.

Music can help you feel energized, motivated and impelled. The type of music you are listening to is also significant, as different genres of music create a distinct atmosphere and mood.

“On my car ride over to school, I always blast EDM music to keep me awake for my 8 a.m.,” sophomore Brianna Tagliamonte said. “Otherwise, I will fall asleep in class. I’ve learned that the hard way.”

Music not only helps students get through the tough times, but is attached to some of the most remarkable experiences in life.

“There’s really a song for just about anything you’re going through in life,” Tagliamonte said. “There’s a song to make you feel like a total girl boss and a song to help you get over that boy who just broke your heart. I have playlists for just about anything, because good music can really make or break an experience.”

Music is central to history and is able to offer deeper meanings that relay important message to its listeners. For many people, music holds a significance in who they are and who they have grown to become.

“As a young Puerto Rican, the recent material that Latin artists have put out has kept me informed and optimistic about our future,” freshman Cierra Spooner said. “It’s how my parents taught me two languages.”

Music has the ability to educate people and spread knowledge. Its potential has a profound impact on the lives of people, from the earliest stages in their lives.

“It has inspired me to keep going, even during the hardest times of my life,” Spooner said.

Music holds a special place in the hearts of many because it functions as their escape and as the one constant they can rely on. Music possesses a beauty and a virtue that positively impacts all types of people from all different parts of the world.

For college students, music can not only act as a driving force, but can influence their emotions and thoughts. This can make them feel capable of tackling the difficulties presented to them. If someone sees that someone else is having a bad day, they could share a song with them. A song that makes people feel happy, a song that makes them feel invincible.

Share the power of music and take advantage of the unity, pleasure and the love it brings to the world.
