Iona splits senior day meet against Fairfield

The Iona College swimming and diving team held its senior night on Jan. 20 against the Fairfield Stags. The women’s team fell by a score of 196-92, while the men’s team cruised to a 175-113 victory in front of a full house at the Hynes Center on Jan. 20.

Sophomore Alyssa Chain claimed victory in the Women’s 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.48, less than 2/10ths of a second over Fairfield freshman Maria Nitti. In the Men’s 50-yard freestyle, Iona took home the top three spots as senior Zack Holbrook, freshman Delano Townsend and senior Kyle Desrosiers came in with times of 21.76, 22.07 and 22.39, respectively.

The Women’s 200-Yard Backstroke saw juniors Maria DiBella and Jessica Schmidt place first and second, posting times of 2:09.59 and 2:12.53. Freshmen Spencer Moran, Gabriel Finch and junior Matthew Bosse posted the top three times in the men’s competition, finishing 1:55.82, 1:55.98 and 1:57.28, respectively.

DiBella also claimed second in the 100-yard backstroke for women, coming in at 1:00.55.

In the Men’s 400-Yard Freestyle Relay, Moran and Holbrook, senior Christian Foti and Desrosiers came in first with a collective time of 3:11.49.

In the 1000-yard freestyle, freshman Adrienne Bilello and senior Kaitlyn Mahon came in third and fourth in the women’s competition, finishing in 10:51.60 and 10:57.93, while sophomore Matthew Anderson and freshman Spencer Moran claimed the top two spots for the men, coming in at 9:40.91 and 10:07.66.

Iona went on the road and faced Fordham Jan. 24. Stats were not available before press time. The Gaels will wrap up the regular season in a road meet against Manhattan on Jan. 27.

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships will take place from Feb. 14 to 17 in Buffalo, New York.
