Gaels fall to Fairfield in MAAC Tournament

The Iona College women’s lacrosse team qualified for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament as the sixth seed, but fell in the first round to third seed Fairfield 14-5 on April 28.

While the Gaels were in the game early, Fairfield proved to be too much for the them.

After keeping the Gaels scoreless over a 10-minute stretch, Fairfield took advantage of this by getting out to a five goal lead and never looking back.

Fairfield outshot Iona 38-30, while holding a 17-13 ground ball advantage.

Seniors Pamela Giordano, Jenna Tolzmann and Kaitlyn Becker each scored a goal. Juniors Maureen Murphy, who finished the season with 11 goals, and Libby Miller also founded the net once.

Junior goalie Shannon McCaffrey recorded 14 saves in the net. McCaffrey would end up finishing the season with 173 saves and a .500 save percentage.

Senior Gabriella Di Domizio registered four caused turnovers. Senior Caleigh Gunn had three caused turnovers.

Two years ago, the Gaels qualified for the tournament, again as the sixth seed in the MAAC. Iona traveled to Monmouth where the team also lost in the first round.

The Gaels ended up winning eight games on the season. It’s the second best win total ever in a season in the program’s history. Iona also went 3-6 in the MAAC.

While the program is looking very bright towards the future, there will be a few great names not with the team next season as Tolzmann, Di Domizio, Becker, Gunn, graduate student Katelyn Noschese, Giordano, Carley Pellechia and Emma Hager will all be graduating.

The graduating students all played a large role in the success of the team. Giordano finished fifth on the school’s all-time scoring list with 113 goals.

Tolzmann finished ninth in goals with 86. Tolzmann started more games in history than any other player (68). Di Domizio finished her career leading the Gaels in career caused turnovers (128) and caused turnovers per-game (1.83).
