Happy September! You know what that means—fall is finally coming. Yes, it’s almost

time for crunchy leaves, hot chocolate and big, warm sweaters. As the new season approaches,

you might be wondering what you can wear to keep up with the fall styles and what will make

you stand out in your daily #ootd posts. Don’t worry—we are here to lay out the fall trends and staples that everyone should have in their closet this season.

First, we’ll start with the basic black leather jacket. Created in several styles, this piece can help add a grunge feel to any of your preexisting outfits, and it will keep you warm in case the temperature drops. To add a little individuality, try looking for leather jackets in different colors such as brown, red or even olive green. For a classic look, try pairing it with some jeans, a white tee and your favorite sneakers!

Another staple to have in your closet this fall season is a pair of simple knee-high boots.

Boots are perfect for when you have that 8 a.m. class and want to make yourself look a little more

put together than your usual sweatpants and sneaker combo. Knee-high boots come in so many different designs and colors that you will be sure to find a pair that fits your personal style. Try styling your boots with some leggings and an oversized sweater.

Utility style clothing is making the transition from summer to fall, bringing back some classic pieces that have not been in style since the 1990s. Cargo pants, jumpsuits and “construction worker” attire have been very popular during the last couple of months. We even saw the trend make an appearance at our 2018 Spring Fashion Show, hosted by the Iona College Fashion Club! The trend includes bottoms and tops with various buckles, pockets and an overall comfortable vibe.

Another trend that always seems to make its way back around during the cooler months is

denim. Denim is one of those trends that will never go out of style, and as the years go on,

more and more ways of customizing and styling denim come to the surface. Denim can be worn so many different ways, making it a great investment for your fashion future. If you’re looking for a more vintage feel try the denim-on-denim look, which is essentially just finding a way to incorporate denim into your entire outfit. This may include wearing your favorite pair of jeans with a denim shirt or jacket. To make yourself stand out more, you can even try and mix different denim washes.

Prints is another trend that will be very prominent this coming season, specifically different types of plaid. Plaid is one of those trends that goes away every once in a while, but usually comes back around toward the end of fall and beginning of winter. If you aren’t a fan of plaid, try and get away from the usual red, black and green plaid that reminds you of the holidays, and explore some different colors, like yellow. Yellow plaid is a way to incorporate neutral fall colors into a print. Try finding a yellow plaid mini skirt, which you can pair with knee-high boots, or a yellow plaid button-up, which is easily paired with denim.

These tips and tricks will upgrade your fall wardrobe and help you make a statement not only on campus, but wherever life happens to take you.
