How to prepare for hair, makeup trends in every season

Edona Maracaj Staff Writer

The fall season is finally starting to set in, and with the change in weather comes a change in clothing choice, styling and shoes. While our choice of wardrobe changes, so do our physical appearances, especially our hair and makeup.

For every new season, there are colors and aesthetics that fit in with each color palette as well as the required layers of clothing for the cold temperatures. Along with each season comes the opportunity to put together new looks and get creative with your everyday hair and makeup. It’s your chance to showcase your talent with a brush, curling wand or eyeshadow palette, so give some of the new trends a shot!

Fall:

The fall season is a time for cooler weather and warmer colors. For those who love trying new makeup looks, you will never go wrong with warm tones and darker colors. Look for reds, maroons, browns and varying shades of black and gray. Eyeshadow palettes like Morphe and Urban Decay’s Naked palettes are just a few options for those wanting to get into the fall mood. Urban Decay’s latest addition to its eyeshadow line is the Naked Cherry palette, which retails for $49 and includes a range of purple, mauve and brown shades. Also check out Morphe’s 15D Day Slayer ($16) and Ring the Alarm ($15) palettes. Both feature browns, greens and yellows along with plenty of shimmers to choose from! Drug store palettes that also offer a variety of fall colors are the MUA Smokey Eye Shadow Palette ($14), and the Wet N Wild Eyeshadow Collection ($2.99 plus).

Since the sun is not as strong during the fall, it may be a good idea to keep your hair down for the season. Not only does it keep you warm, but it’s a great way to spice up your look after constantly wearing it up in the heat. For those with short hair or pixie cuts, try adding some extra volume. Adding even a little bit of dimension can change the whole look of your hair! If you’re avoiding adding heat to your hair, try wetting your hair before adding moose or hairspray and scrunching it with a towel. You’ll then have manageable waves without the pain of using a curling iron. If heat is not a problem, then some gentle waves or lightly combed curls are always a great idea. When in doubt, a beanie is always a classic in the colder months.

Winter:

Much like fall, winter also allows for warmer colors. Winter is also a time for simpler makeup. Because the spring semester starts in January, it can be hard to wake up every morning to focus on makeup and hair – the cold can make anyone want to stay in bed for as long as possible. This is why letting your hair flow naturally is a great option- especially if you need to cover your ears to keep them warm. Not only is this a super easy look – as you just have to brush your hair in the morning – but you are also not doing any additional damage to your hair. In order to look like some effort has been made, add small braids – like the waterfall braid – or simply just braid your hair the night before and let it loose in the morning. If you do choose to straighten or curl your hair in the colder months, be cautious, as the colder weather can make hair more brittle and prone to breakage.

For makeup, you can never go wrong with a simple mascara and eyeliner look. If you want your eyes to appear bigger, add white eyeliner to the lower lash line and a thin top line on the upper lid. Try a darker brown eyeliner to reduce the dramatic effect black eyeliner can have. Above all, don’t forget to moisturize! Your skin is getting little attention from the sun, but the dry wind and cold air dries your skin out faster than you’d expect. Keeping your skin hydrated with a moisturizer and drinking lots of water can only be beneficial to your health.

Spring:

Spring brings about warmer weather and more often than not, rain. This can make it hard to maintain hair if it is always getting wet. For this season, pulling your hair back or putting it up into a messy bun is the best option. Not only does it keep your hair together, but it is a fast hairstyle that will save time and requires little to no effort. Another option – regardless of hair length – is adding a hat or any hair accessory that catches the eye and covers the head. To avoid breakage, try using scrunchies or spiral hair ties. These products aren’t as harsh on your hair and will cause less long-term damage than regular hair elastics.

Spring is arguably the season that allows for the most fun when it comes to makeup. Face primer is an incredibly important step, and ELF offers a variety of primers for skin types. Test out which one is right for you! When it comes to eyeshadows, bright colors are always fun to experiment with. Pastels and neon shades are a staple in the spring, so it is the perfect time to experiment with those wild looks you always wanted to try. Some eyeshadow palettes that work best are the BH Cosmetics Take Me Back to Brazil ($18) palette or the NYX Professional Makeup (about $16) palette. Bright colors are a great way to work with the brightness that the spring season offers.

Summer:

Summer is perhaps the trickiest season when it comes to hair and makeup. Since it is so hot, it can be hard for makeup to stay on without it sweating off, while hair only adds to the heat. For those who can’t stand the heat and are looking to take some off of their backs, cutting your hair short is a great option. Short hair allows for more flexibility and isn’t as hard to handle.

One makeup essential during the summer is a moisturizer with SPF. On top of that, it is best not to go too heavy on your makeup. For those that still want to look put together, but not too cakey, use a BB Cream or a CC Cream instead of foundation. For eye looks, adding on some mascara or false lashes and some highlight under the eyebrow is always an option. Adding highlighter to the face and cupids bow also creates an amazing effect for when the sun is beating down on you. You can match this with a red or pink lip to tie everything together.

There is one hairstyle that is always fitting no matter the season – braids. YouTube is the best place to search for how-to videos on how to make a specific braid, like the fish-tale or the lobster braid. Try a new style every season and see what works best for you. As far as makeup is concerned, keeping the face hydrated and protected is the most important thing, no matter what season it is.
