Cost-effective costume ideas

It can be difficult to find that perfect, budget friendly costume for Halloween in college, especially when “Halloweekend” lasts for three or four days! If you want to blow your budget on a crazy costume for one night – so you need cheaper options for the other three days – or you’re just looking for a cost-effective costume, this list is for you!

1. Boxer/Fighter

This costume is super easy to pull together! All you need are gym shorts, a tank top or sports bra, pre-wrap – or tape – and some black eye makeup. Use the pre-wrap or tape to wrap your knuckles and use the black face paint of eyeshadow to simulate a black eye. To make it more authentic, you can add a robe and maybe even a little fake blood!

2. Girl Scout/Boy Scout

Dig out that old sash, vest or uniform and put all those badges to good use! You can pair it with any clothing you’d like underneath. Want to make it more authentic? Try putting your hair in pigtails or gelling your hair down. You can add a box of Girl Scout cookies or some Boy Scout popcorn for the finishing touch!

3. Fruit Salad

Looking for a fun and easy group costume? Try going as a fruit salad! Everyone chooses a fruit and then makes a t-shirt in the necessary color and style. A pineapple may have a yellow shirt with triangles all over it, while a watermelon would have a pink shirt with black circles on it. Check online for some more fruit-spiration!

4. Lifeguard

You don’t necessarily need a red lifeguard top for this one, but it’s always a nice touch! A red top and red or white shorts should do the trick. Using white fabric paint, add the lifeguard lettering to the top. You can add a whistle from the local dollar store and some white face paint at the end of your nose for sunscreen as well.

5. “The Bachelor/Bachelorette” and their rejected suitor

Looking for a couples’ costume? Try going as the Bachelor or Bachelorette and the one they let get away! You can both wear formal clothing. The best part, you can switch up who is who throughout the night! One can take turns holding the rose while the other ‘cries’ and vice versa!

Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box this Halloween. There’s no need to spend a ton of money on a costume when you can pull one together just as easily!
