‘Creed 2’ includes knockout performances

Michael B. Jordan stars as Adonis Creed in the second installment of the “Creed” series in a story that is inspired by the film “Rocky IV.” The film was released in theaters on Nov. 21.

In “Creed 2,” Adonis Creed is crowned heavyweight champion with the help of his trainer, Rocky Balboa, played by Sylvester Stallone. Adonis Creed is met by a new foe, who not only wants to take the crown but also happens to be the son of Ivan Drago. Drago – played by Dolph Lundgren – is an old opponent of Rocky Balboa and the man who killed Adonis’ father, Apollo Creed, during a boxing match. Adonis Creed takes on a path of redemption in this inspiring tale of a son trying to continue his father’s legacy.

Overall, I was a little disappointed by “Creed 2,” but the film is still worth the watch. The film managed to catch my interest both during the opening scene where Creed is set to take on a heavyweight championship match and in the preparation phases of the movie’s following fights. The film’s highlights were during the fun and suspenseful fight scenes. That said, the rest of the movie felt like a really slow build-up to these moments.

Jordan provides an outstanding performance that will leave viewers crying, laughing and cheering. Tessa Thompson – who plays Bianca, Adonis’ wife – adds a softer side to the film that creates memorable moments for the hopeless romantics who are watching.

Stallone brings a sense of nostalgia from the “Rocky” series. During the film, he provides inspiring words of wisdom and references to the older franchise that is sure to make moviegoers want to be in the ring alongside the great Rocky Balboa once again.

Adonis’ mother, Mary Anne – played by Phylicia Rashad – is another wise character in the film. She teaches Creed how to fulfill his father’s legacy and helps Adonis become mentally stronger so that he can focus on beating Ivan Drago’s son.

The soundtrack is a huge part of “Creed 2.” The soundtrack, which includes a modern rendition of the “Rocky” theme song “Gonna Fly Now,” creates a flow of emotions within each scene. The film also has inspired an album with a long list of artists for the fans interested in the musical aspect of the film and want to relive the movie through the sound of music producer, Mike WiLL Made-It.

I also enjoyed how more context was added to Ivan Drago’s life after his loss to Rocky Balboa. It added more depth to the story of Drago’s son and his reason for wanting to take down Adonis Creed.

My overall opinion on “Creed 2” is that although it was slow in the middle, it was a great film that managed to capture my attention. Honestly, I did not like the film better than its previous installment. The story felt a little forced and confusing, but I appreciated the slight nods to “Rocky IV.”

I highly recommend going to see “Creed 2” with friends and family for an enjoyable watching experience filled with action-packed, boxing entertainment. The film may be a little slow at some points, but the build-up is surely worth it in the end. If you have nothing to do this holiday season, grab a friend and go see “Creed 2.”
