Why independently, locally-run coffee shops are better

There is a little network of coffee shops in Massachusetts and Rhode Island called Marylou’s. They have a lengthy menu of options, great service and incredibly low prices. I must admit, this locally-owned collection of coffee shops entirely inspired this opinion piece. I’m sure I’m not alone when I say I’m a bit tired of people arguing over what’s better – Dunkin Donuts (or simply “Dunkin,” as the company is trying to officially rebrand it) or Starbucks coffee. The answer is simple. Both are entirely mediocre. Why would you go with overpriced, mass-produced coffee from an international chain when you can go with a local great?

When I first came to Iona, I knew I had to find some options for my coffee other than Dunkin and Starbucks or I’d go crazy. The best part of ordering from a non-chain coffee shop is their array of options; every Dunkin and Starbucks has the same exact menu with the same exact choices. When you go to an independent shop, they often have variations of flavors, different menu options and surprise specials to choose from. As a coffee addict, the thought of getting the same exact coffee order (iced coffee with soy milk and two pumps of caramel) made me want to pull my hair out.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Starbucks is so convenient, it’s on the meal plan!” or “Dunkin is right down the street!” Sure, I get it. Saving money is important for college students, and for those who have developed a coffee addiction, cost and convenience are often the first priority. That said, consider this – how long is it going to take before you get bored of the same menu, the same flavors, the same order every single day? Wouldn’t you rather mix it up a little bit and find a coffee mix you truly love than suffer through the same mediocre supply every single day? Even getting a different brand once a week can prolong the inevitable.

I’m not saying you should completely abandon chain coffee shops. I’m just suggesting that if you have the opportunity to supplement a Starbucks or Dunkin cup of coffee with one from an independent shop, you should take it. If that means you only visit the smaller coffee shops when you’re home and can’t use your meal plan, so be it.

Not only will you be supporting local business, the coffee is usually way better too. Smaller coffee shops also have a tendency to lower their prices in order to compete with the bigger chain shops.

If you are looking to branch out around Iona, I’d suggest Caffè Ammi Roasting Co., Rochelle Coffee Shop, Sunshine Coffee Roasters or J Cafe.
