Second season of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ introduces new family dynamics
August 19, 2020
“The Umbrella Academy,” a Netflix series about a family of seven skilled superheroes known as the Hargreeves, ended its first season by having siblings Five, Allison, Klaus, Luther, Diego, Vanya and Ben’s ghosts jump back in time to stop the apocalypse. The ending left fans speculating to where and when our characters would travel, and the first episode of season two immediately answers the fans’ questions. Each sibling in the Hargreeves family travels back to different times during the 1960s in Dallas. With each of the siblings separated, Five has to bring them all together in order to prevent another apocalypse from happening.
When I started watching the first episodes of the season, I was frustrated because it seemed like a direct repeat of season one. However, as the season progressed, the new character dynamics and sibling relations made season two stand out on its own.
In the beginning, I didn’t feel connected to the characters, but as it went on season two allowed me to appreciate all of their different personalities a lot more. In the first season, the family was separated by feelings of resentment and tension; however, since this season separates the characters and forces them to be on their own, their reunion was incredibly special.
The season also deals with the trauma that the Hargreeves all faced growing up with their father. One amazing scene, which was beautifully acted by David Castañeda, shows Diego’s vulnerability and how much his father affected his mental state. This season also addresses the trauma that Vanya faces after realizing what she did in the first season.
There was a lot of love throughout this season and it highlighted just how much the family really cares about one another, despite their differences. The family dynamic between the characters seemed like real interactions I would have with my own siblings, making me relate and enjoy the season more.
The more emotional scenes are balanced with high tension, action–packed fight sequences. There is a different variety of scenes involving the family’s superhero abilities, hand-to-hand combat and utilizing weapons. While these scenes are heavy on gore, blood and death, they are nonetheless intriguing.
Overall, I think this season – as well as the show – is a must watch. With the action sequences and personal relationships, “The Umbrella Academy” offers something interesting for everyone. I am very excited for the next season to come on Netflix.
