Iona Athletes recommend their favorite movies
May 15, 2020
An athlete’s life consists of keeping in top shape and practicing their craft to make sure they stay on top of their game, but they also have free time to do what they please.
One thing a lot of people are doing nowadays is watching movies or shows on popular streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video and Disney Plus. Some of Iona’s athletes shared their favorite sports-themed movies that they like to watch.
Junior Adrienne Digioia recommends “Love and Basketball” and “Coach Carter.” “Love and Basketball” is pretty self-explanatory; it tells the story of two young basketball players, Quincy and Monica, who grow up as next-door neighbors and go through their basketball careers together, eventually falling in love. “Coach Carter” is about the true story of Richmond High School basketball coach Ken Carter, who suspended his undefeated basketball team in 1999 due to poor academic performance, making headlines across the nation.
Freshman Parker Weiss joined Digioia’s recommendation of “Coach Carter,” while adding in “Glory Road” and “Remember the Titans.” “Glory Road” tells the true story of the events leading up to the 1966 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. It follows the journey of Josh Lucas, the then head coach of Texas Western College, who coached the first all-black college basketball team. “Remember the Titans” is about an African American high school football coach named Hermane Boone, played by Denzel Washington. Boone has a tough time integrating his team in Alexandria, Virginia, and the movie tells the story about the team’s triumphs.
Junior Samuel Punzi suggests “Beer League,” “Bull Durham” and “Money Ball.” “Beer League” is a baseball comedy about a lazy slacker who tries his best to get his team to improve their skills in softball in an effort to stay in the local league. “Bull Durham” is a romantic comedy partly based on the real life experiences of director Ron Shelton. “Money Ball” is a biographical movie about the Oakland A’s 2002 season and their struggle to put together a team that could properly compete in the MLB.
