This year the Iona College Music Program of the Fine and Performing Arts Department created a new opportunity for students by inaugurating its first annual Conducting Competition.
The competition took place on Nov. 25, 2019 at 5 p.m. The competitors each had a short period to work with the Instrumental Ensemble to conduct and subsequently rehearse a piece, demonstrating their ability not only to conduct, but also effectively rehearse an ensemble.
All competitors were prepared and the competition level was high. We are excited to announce that the winner of the competition was senior Laura Kandro.
Kandro, a music minor, will be recorded as the first-ever winner and will conduct a short piece in the Spring Gala Concert: Iona Instrumental and Vocal Ensembles on May 1, which happens to be Kandro’s final concert before graduation.
The Music Program is thrilled to inaugurate this new opportunity for Iona students. Please share this information with anyone you think may be interested in our future competitions!
