Iona men’s basketball recruiting news and notes
April 8, 2019
Tim Cluess had perhaps his most impressive season as the Iona College men’s basketball head coach this past season. An inauspicious start quickly became a season to remember halfway through the campaign.
Cluess and his team flipped on the switch and rode a scorching hot finish to the regular season all the way to their fourth straight MAAC tournament championship and NCAA tournament appearance. Per usual, Cluess built his team with four-year players and transfers.
So, who may we see on next year’s team? What transfers will be next season’s Asante Gist, Ben Perez or Tajuan Agee? Here is a look at how Iona has been active in recruiting circuit so far.
AJ McNeil
According to JucoRecruiting.com, Cluess will add a junior college guard AJ McNeil into the mix. Prior to committing to Iona, Neil played at Redlands Community College in El Reno, Oklahoma.
The sophomore guard, who stands at 6-foot-2, played extremely well last season, averaging 23.9 points-per game, 6.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. Neil shot 51.7 percent from the field and 39.3 percent from three.
McNeil can form a dynamic duo with Gist to help be a key part to the high-powered Cluess offense.
Jawaun Daniels
Reports have indicated that Iona offered Jawaun Daniels from Odessa College a scholarship in July of 2018. While Koster and McNeil were key players on their prior teams, Daniels played a lesser role at Odessa.
As a freshman, he averaged nine points a game in 35 games played. He shot 47.9 percent from the field and averaged 5.1 rebounds as game. He plays wing and he has a very large frame at 6-foot-7.
