SADD steps up with murder mystery
October 26, 2010
On Oct. 23, the Burke Lounge in Spellman Hall played host to a Murder Mystery Dessert hosted by Iona’s SADD organizations. SADD, which stands for Students Against Destructive Decisions, is an Iona organization which promotes awareness about alcohol and other potentially dangerous substances. As an organization, SADD’s mission is to deter students from making potentially destructive decisions, and works to ensure the well being of the student’s of Iona.
The event, which was hosted on Saturday night, is meant to serve as a college sponsored alternative to other more illicit activities. For the event, the organization hired legitimate actors to come in and perform a “murder mystery”. Participants in the event are given materials and clues that they are supposed to use to sort out a “who-dun-it” type of mystery.
Although it was Saturday night, the event still received a positive turnout, with a good number of students, along with family members and friends, participating in the event.
“The event had a good turn out, and everything ran smoothly as planned,” said SADD president Erin Kyle.
For SADD, this is the second year in which they have sponsored a murder mystery event. Falling on Homecoming weekend, it is SADD’s aim to make this event one an annual one.
“We’re hoping to make this happen every year,” said Kyle. “We’ve had good experiences so far, and would love to keep it going!”
As an organization, SADD is still in its infancy at Iona. With this said, however, it is important to note that they have still made their mark, and have grown rapidly since their inception. Although they are relatively young, the organization was awarded the Gael award in 2009-2010 for Most Outstanding Organization. In their short time, they have made outstanding contributions to the college and to Iona students. Their sponsorship of the Murder Mystery Dessert and other events is evidence of their contributions.
