‘Glee’ mystery for Super Bowl XLV
November 30, 2010
The mystery is finally over. Ever since Fox’s “Glee” announced it would be airing a special episode surrounding around one mystery singer after this upcoming February’s Super Bowl XLV, everyone has been dying to find out who it is. And this November the build-up finally came to an end.
Entertainment Weekly disclosed the news, revealing that the original plan for one singer had actually changed. Now the episode will be like any other, featuring numerous songs by different artists.
Before fans become too disappointed, the post-Super Bowl episode is going to stand out from the norm. According to their “Glee” source, EW writes it will be a “…supersized episode, which our source says will be the most expensive in Glee history and likely one of television’s priciest episodes ever…”
On top of that, the songs planning to be covered are by today’s tops artists.
The ones revealed include covers of the Black Eyed Peas, Lady Antebellum, Katy Perry, and, wait for it…..Michael Jackson!
“…Glee will be tackling Michael Jackson’s iconic ‘Thriller’ for their post-Super Bowl episode…but with a twist. The Jackson classic will be performed as a mash-up with another song, yet to be chosen” writes EW.
“Glee,” among many other things, is known for their famous mash-ups, some examples being: “Halo”/”Walking on Sunshine,” “It’s My Life”/”Confessions Part 2,” and “Don’t Stand So Close To Me”/”Young Girl.” So hopefully, “Thriller” and its mystery counterpart will be a song to remember.
Michael Jackson had actually been one of the big names that had been fueling the rumor mill over what star would be covered on the show after the Super Bowl. Bruce Springsteen has also been a big maybe since interest in collaborating with him had been expressed by creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk and actress Jane Lynch. “I think Bruce is our next holy grail,” Murphy said to EW.
Other maybes were Prince and the Beatles, Murphy saying to E! Online, “I have a list of three dream people who I would love to do after the Super Bowl: I would love to do something about Prince. I think Prince would be amazing. I want to do a Beatles episode. I would love to do a Jackson episode, so one of those three we’ll do for the Super Bowl. I don’t know which one.”
Even actress Lea Michelle added fuel to the fire. “I think they are saving Justin Timberlake for the Super Bowl episode. They have to be, because he is so perfect for our show. He has to be on it!…If not Justin, I would hope it would be the sequel to the Madonna episode. She has so many more amazing songs we didn’t even touch,” Michele said in an interview with MTV.
Upon revealing the true nature of the show, EW wrote that their source revealed that out of everyone, Sir Elton John was the only artist that had been seriously considered.
Some people are probably sighing with relief over the knowledge that the special episode will not be a theme. So far, the only artists the show has centered on have been Madonna, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga (the latter the only one not having every song sung by her).
So, Gleeks all around can finally put their speculation away and give in to their anticipation, February will be here soon enough.
