Student Government shakes things up

Iona College’s Student Government Association was faced with several changes in its executive board as senior Anthony Berni stepped down from his position as vice president for finance during the SGA’s Legislative meeting on Oct 6.

Sophomore Andrew Casalino, who had been serving as vice president for communication, stepped into Berni’s position, while sophomore Senator Jaclyn Shearer was then voted to take over for Casalino.

Berni announced to the SGA legislature that he would be stepping down due to the extensive time commitments that the position entailed.

“When I ran for vice president for finance last year, I was confident that I would be able to fulfill the role,” Berni said. “However, the time commitments as they were presented to me did not include the many extra events that the SGA Executive Board must attend. In future years, I recommend that these time commitments be better outlined for e-board Iona.”

The floor was opened for nominations of a new vice president for communication. The executive board nominated Shearer, who accepted. A motion was made to extend nominations and voting to the next SGA meeting scheduled for the following week, but the majority of the legislature ruled to vote the same day.

Shearer, addressing those present, said, “I believe that I have the experience from my time as a class senator to serve SGA in this position, as well as passion and an understanding of the time commitment her.”

Time will tell how the SGA executive board will work to accommodate its new vice president for finance and vice president for communication. The group expressed that they will try to make these transitions as smooth as possible.
