Swag, NOT sag

October 11, 2011
We’ve all seen them – those guys who walk around with their pants sitting so low that you can fully appreciate the pattern on their new boxers. Until now, the only reaction to this fashion faux pas has been the occasional eye roll or the side comment to a friend- “does he even know what a belt IS?”
In the city of Albany, Georgia, quite a few guys have learned exactly what a belt is for within the last year. On November 23 of 2010, the city enacted its “saggy pants ban” could be deemed as unconstitutional.
Although I wholeheartedly advocate for full underwear coverage, I do think that the laws in Georgia and around the country raise some interesting questions about what exactly the government has control over as far as fashion is concerned.
If these laws don’t meet any significant legal opposition, the city of Albany will definitely rake in a pretty penny from all those saggy pants. But more importantly, the precedent will be set to allow city and state governments to tell its citizens how to wear their clothes.
New Rochelle doesn’t currently have any laws banning saggy pants, so Iona students don’t have to worry about getting slapped with a fine for rocking their jeans under their bums. But just because you can, should you?
Hint: In this case, I wouldn’t recommend it.
