The attire was spandex, sweatbands and sneakers.

No, the clothing was not for participation in an eighties work-out video. Rather, the attire depicts the uniform for participants in Iona College’s first annual Night Spike.

With two volleyball courts set up for fierce competition, 10 teams of four players set, bumped and spiked in hopes of becoming the first ever Night Spike champions. Killian the Gael even took time out of his busy schedule as a world traveler to cheer on the teams in their quest for victory.

Sponsored by the Resident Assistants of Conese and South Halls, Students Against Destructive Decisions and the Commuter Student Association, Night Spike is a charity volleyball tournament in which teams participate not only for the thrill of competition, but also to raise money for an organization that devotes itself to helping others.

“We chose to give all proceeds of Night Spike to Iona in Mission because it is a great program that provides amazing opportunities for students at Iona,” said junior Resident Assistant Lauren Zanfardino. “To give back to Iona in Mission meant a lot to the South and Conese RA staff because we wanted to show how much the program impacts not only our staff, but the Iona community as a year.”

The four members of Night Spike’s winning team, sophomores Trevor Gilson, Alex Tomasetti and Sam Stablein, along with Stablein’s sister Nancy, are sure to spread the word of their great Night Spike experience, ensuring an even better event in 2012.

So Gaels, spend the next 12 months practicing your spike and be prepared to dominate the courts in next fall’s second annual Night Spike!
