The Iona College volleyball team coasted to a three-set sweep over Saint Peter’s on the road in the first of their three remaining games.

Freshman Catrina Warren and sophomore Alicja Pawelec led the way for the Gaels in their dominating performance. Warren notched 14.5 points, while Pawelec picked up 14.

The Gaels were able to pick up the easy win, by forming large leads at the beginning of every set. In the first set Iona dashed to a 7-0 lead. In that same set they boasted leads of 16-4, 20-5 and the final score of 25-7. In the second set, the Gaels jumped to an early 8-2 lead, and never looked back.

Nothing changed in the third set, and the Gaels continued their streaky play with an early 10-0 lead.

On the day, Warren had 11 kills with four blocks and teammate Pawelec had 13 kills and an ace to lead Iona in the rout.

With this win, the Gaels held a half game lead for the fourth and final spot in the MAAC postseason. With two games left, anything was possible for Iona.

Heading to Bronx, N.Y. to take on rival Manhattan, the Gaels were ready to put up a fight and make the postseason like last season.

The Gaels pushed their play in this match, but unfortunately dropped a five-setter.

Iona built an early two set lead in the match with 25-21 and 25-21 wins, but it ended up not being enough.

The Jaspers came storming back at home and went on a three set rally winning 25-22, 25-11 and 17-15.  The loss was a devastating blow to the Gaels playoff chances as they dropped out of the last playoff spot with one game remaining.

Warren picked up her play once again and recorded 15 kills and seven blocks in the loss. Senior Nicole Tamburri had a double-double with 45 assists and 13 digs.

In the season finale, the Gaels hosted Fairfield and dropped the game in straight sets.

Seniors Molly O’Shea and Nicole Tamburri were honored on senior night.

Tamburri recorded 24 assists and five digs, while fellow senior O’Shea picked up two kills and had a team-best three blocks.

With the loss the Gaels playoff chances ended, but the season was a positive start in Coach Jon Killingbeck’s rookie campaign. The Gaels went 9-9 in the MAAC.

The Gaels tied for sixth, but were just one win from making it to the playoffs.

Killingbeck’s young team adopted a new system of play and did well adjusting to the passing oriented line of attack.

Pawelec and Warren were named All-MAAC for their play this season. Pawelec was named to the All-MAAC Second Team.

Warren was named to both the All-MAAC Second Team and the conference’s inaugural All-Rookie team.
