Influential and renowned ladies of the past will forever be remembered through film. Past beauties such as Marilyn Monroe, Princess Diana and Grace Kelly are all being honored on the silver screen as of late. Portraying them are modern beauties and A-list celebrities, all whom exude classiness and candor on screen and in life.
Flirty, fun and blonde Marilyn Monroe demanded the attention of the public once again with the release of “My Week With Marilyn” a biopic depicting the actress’s time in Britain when filming “The Prince and the Showgirl.”
Michelle Williams, well known for her roles in “Brokeback Mountain” and “Blue Valentine,” was given the part. Williams’ performance is noteworthy and rightfully the winner of a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. She has also been nominated for the Oscar for Best Actress.
The film is also host to Oscar nominee Kenneth Branagh for Best Supporting Actor. Entertainment Weekly gave the movie a B+ and comments “Michelle Williams plays Monroe, and she’s a wonder. Working opposite a suitably florid Kenneth Branagh as that high thespian Sir Larry, a platinum, sultry Williams knows exactly how to throw the switch that turns on MM’s movie-star incandescence, then flick it off to reveal the vulnerable young woman in the dark.”
After the success this film garnered, the trend to honor other big names of the past is readily accepted by fans and critics alike.
The next to be given a biopic is the late Princess Diana of Wales. Real buzz about the film is scarce as it is still in early stages of creation but a title has been released. “Caught in Flight” will focus on the last two years of beloved Di’s life and is rumored to be released in 2013. Most recently news for the film is the announcement that actress Naomi Watts will play the princess. In a release Watts stated, “It is such an honor to be able to play this iconic role…Princess Diana was loved across the world and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen.” Undoubtedly the film will bring in a large audience, for the mere fact that Diana was loved by all. The intrigue of her tragic and untimely death will pull many to the theatre upon release.
Royalty is once again set to be honored but this time for timeless star, Grace Kelly. Kelly, well known for her striking beauty, is famous for starring in many of Alfred Hitchcock’s famous pieces, “To Catch and Thief”, “Dial M For Murder”, and “Rear Window”. Kelly was friend to several Oscars and Golden Globe Awards, having won both honors for her role in “The Country Girl” alongside Bing Crosby and William Holden. Kelly was also nominated for an Oscar and received a Golden Globe for her part in “Mogambo” opposite Clark Gable and Ava Gardner. What sets Kelly apart from the rest, though, is her real life fairy tale which will translate wonderfully onscreen. Kelly gave up acting at age 26 to pursue a romance with the Prince of Monaco, Rainer III, who she would eventually marry making her the Princess Consort of Monaco.
News only recently came out that a film focusing around her is in the works, and is described more to be a period piece comparable to “The Kings Speech.” The work is titled “Grace of Monaco”, the very title Kelly held in real life. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the plot “…focuses on a six month period in 1962 when the city-state got into a heated dispute with France, which grew tired of the petite principality being a tax haven. Kelly, still relatively new in her role as princess, maneuvered behind the scenes to save Monaco from a coup.” An actress to portray Kelly has yet to be named.
Undoubtedly, these three films will become even bigger news in the future when more progress on them is made. Not only is this because “My week with Marilyn” was so successful but because of the fact that the films focus around such iconic woman. Although this women are no longer living, their memories and legacies remain strong and alive in the hearts of many today.
