Students on the right track with iTrax

How many Iona students come out of class thinking that what they learn cannot be applied to the real world or their intended jobs?

Defying this mindset are Junior Sean O’Shea and Senior Nicholas Krzemienski. Recently, they created a new iPhone app called iTraxs.

The knowledge for creating this app came from an iPhone Programming Computer Science class they took with Professor of Computer Science Lubomir Ivanov.

The idea for this app came from Krzemienski’s love for music. “I listen to a lot of house music,” he said, stating that most of these songs can be ten or more minutes long. Many times he found there was a three of four-minute section he loved.

Through the creation of this app, he is able to cut down the song, creating a new file and a reference library to the sections that he loves.

Another great feature of the app is its ability to export the cut song back onto one’s computer. “It is geared towards long sets and songs,” said Krzemienski, identifying that it is most useful for DJs.

While at first they only had a 99-cent version available for download, Krzemienski and O’Shea released a free version on March 2. The free version is limited, though. It is only able to cut down five songs, and these cannot be exported back onto the computer.

Currently their app has over 500 users, and it received five stars on iTunes app store.

Neither thought they would create an app or even be Computer Science majors prior to coming to Iona. Krzemienski was unaware that Iona had a Computer Science Department, and O’Shea wanted to go into Engineering.

Both enrolled in CS 201, and it changed their lives. “Iona has an incredible CS program,” Krzemienski said. While it is a small major, the faculty is dedicated. Both O’Shea and Krzemienski credit Ivanov with their ability to create the app.

Even though they are both enrolled in the five-year Master’s Program at Iona, they both plan to continue to be entrepreneurs.

Krzemienski already works for an IOS start-up company. The start-up allows him the freedom and atmosphere of a close-knit team, similar to entrepreneurship. He and O’Shea have a company, Majestyk Apps, that is currently expanding.

Iona College has been very supportive of their creation, seeking their help to create an Iona College app. This endeavor is helping them to expand into becoming consultants, creating apps for other companies.

Aside from working with Iona, they also created their own Web site. Their company Majestyk works with software in general. “It is good to have a specialty, though,” said Krzemienski, “and it’s an app-based world.”

Being so app-savvy, of course they have their favorite apps.

“The app to see how many sales there are on our own app,” Krzemienski said jokingly when asked what his favorite is.

While he does have such an app, he also uses Pandora, ESPN, Facebook and Soundcloud. “I’m more into games,” O’Shea said, listing Words with Friends and Temple Run.

Even though apps are available on multiple types of smartphones, theirs is currently only available on iPhones. While they do prefer iPhones over Androids, this is not why iTraxs has not been released on Androids. “Android has a different language,” O’Shea said. iPhone and iPad use IOS, which is the language that both Krzemienski and O’Shea know for coding.

With the freedom of entrepreneurship, the future looks bright for O’Shea and Krzemienski. Both are contacted frequently on Linkedin by recruiters and headhunters for other companies.

Within the next few months, Majestyk Apps will be releasing another app that is likely to be a game.
