Track has memorable year as three head to nationals

Seniors Mitch Goose, Lenny Korir and Heidi Gregson will be heading to nationals. Korir is defending his 5k title.

Iona College’s highly rated distance program is closing out another successful indoor track season. The team won multiple titles at the MAAC Championships and broke many school and MAAC records

Last weekend, the men’s indoor track team competed at the 2012 IC4A Championships at Boston University’s Track & tennis Center. Senior Alexander Soderberg placed third in the 5,000-meter run.

The harrier registered a time of 14:10.27, which was only around three seconds behind first and second.

Freshman Jake Byrne set an Iona freshman record with a time of 14:11.41 placing fifth in his race. Freshman Andrew Kowalsky was close behind in 14:12.51, also beating the old freshman record.

Senior Daniel Lipus won his preliminary round heat the mile 4:10.44.

The women’s indoor track team competed at both the 2012 ECAC Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury, MA and the Columbia Last Chance Meet at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York.

Freshman Regina Neumeyer earned silver medal accolades in the mile. She ran her third fastest time of the season clocking in 4:47.17, while finishing just over a second from first place.

Junior Hollie Rowland was third in the 5,000-meter run, crossing the line in 16:29.82. The race was also Rowland’s second fastest time of the season.

Senior Heidi Gregson finished fifth in the mile run in 4:40.21. The race was her second fastest time of the season and third fastest in school history.

A trio of Gaels also earned spots in the NCAA Championships at Boise State University this weekend. Goose, Gregson and Korir all made the honor of representing Iona and running in the most coveted race of the indoor track season.

Goose gained his spot by running 7:51.75 in the 3,000-meter run at the UW Husky Classic held on Feb. 10. Goose’s time was registered as the 13th fastest time this season.

His teammate Korir will make his second straight trip to nationals. Korir qualified for both the 3,000-meter and 5,000 meter runs. Korir’s MAAC record run of 7:51.83 earned him a spot in the 3,000-meter run. As the defending national champion in the 5k, Korir will have many runners looking to beat him. Korir sports the third fastest time in NCAA history, which was run in 13:19.54 at 105th Millrose Games.

The lone female runner from Iona will be Gregson. She comes back to nationals this season after running as a sophomore in 2010 in Fayetteville, AR. Gregson will be seeded 15th in the women’s mile run. She also put up a record time at the UW Husky Classic. She ran a school record time of 4:38.85 at the meet.

The men’s 5k final will be on March 9 and the 3k final will be on March 10. The women’s preliminary round start on March 9 with the final ending on March 10.
