‘Teen Wolf’ finale
April 2, 2014
The season finale of the supernaturally themed drama “Teen Wolf” premiered last Monday. After a 12-episode string of unexpected twists, surprise villains, and two shocking character deaths, fans of the show were treated to a cliffhanger in anticipation for the new season.
Critics of the show are voicing opinions on whether the show took the death of main character Allison Argent too far.
Those who have been following the show expressed how episode after episode the tragic moments just seemed unnecessary after a while.
“I don’t feel like her death was necessary at all,” said junior Ariana D’Avanzo. “She was such a big part of the show, and is still such an inspiring character, especially for women.”
Even though the actress, Crystal Reed, wanted to leave the show—citing creative differences as the reason—fans felt that killing her off was unwarranted. The main critique comes from “Teen Wolf” having a history of killing off exclusively female villains, while male villains remain alive.
However, her exit was quickly followed by the reintroduction of a female character, previously killed off in season one. Kate Argent, coincidentally Allison’s aunt, walked out of the fog in the finale minutes and stepped right into the role of main villain for the next season.
“I was really surprised by Kate’s return, but I guess with this show anything is possible,” D’Avanzo said.
The MTV hit show drew in a viewership of 2.3 million; making the finale Monday’s number one Cable Telecast. It also generated around 850,000 specific tweets and 52 trending topics, according to TV by the Numbers.
While it’s been popular since its premiere, the constant drama the show throws at its fans can become tiring.
“I used to watch the show during the first season,” said junior Michelle Rojas. “But it just got really complicated and confusing. I feel like they’re just doing things as a shock factor instead of trying to progress the story.”
In the last half of the season alone: new characters came and went, werewolf Aiden met his end in the finale as well; new supernatural creatures were introduced, were-coyotes and kitsune foxes took the focus away from the wolves; and the lovable sidekick became the main bad guy after becoming possessed and causing massive chaos throughout the town of Beacon Hills.
The show is definitely action and drama packed. It might be too early to determine if they have taken things too far. A clear answer will only come after seeing if the fan base chooses to come back next season.
The show returns, after only a three-month break, on June 23. Those who want to catch up on all of the excitement and suspense that comes with the show can access the previous seasons on Netflix and at MTV.com.
