Swift’s new single shakes records
September 4, 2014
Taylor Swift is shaking off her country roots and taking the pop charts by storm with her new single.
The song “Shake it Off,” and its music video were released on August 18th in a live streamed event on Yahoo!. It is the first new single from Swift since her album “Red” was released in 2012.
In only a week, Swift has once again taken the nation by storm. Billboard.com cites that “Shake it Off” has now broken the record for the highest debut ever on Adult Pop Songs. Even more, it also ties the record for best start on Pop Songs.
The single, an anthem against the haters, has sold 544,000 copies in its first week of availability, according to Forbes. This makes the song Swift’s second number one hit, only falling behind “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” from 2012.
“Taylor Swift’s new single and music video, in my opinion, show a new side of her, which I wasn’t expecting, and I am excited to see what the future holds for her,” said junior Jessica White, secretary of the Iona Singers.
Not only, however, were the track and its corresponding music video released. Swift, in a unique fashion, simultaneously released “Shake it Off” and announced the name of her fifth studio album, “1989.”
This album, titled for the year Swift was born, will be released Oct. 27. With this news, Swift also released the album cover, a Polaroid shot of herself with “T.S. 1989” written in what looks like marker at the bottom. This album will turn away from the country genre and look more to pop.
“I think that the single is really good. Not many people have the courage to jump into a completely different genre of music (country to pop),” said junior Drea Cimino. “I think this album will be a nice change for her,” she said.
The Washington Post cites Swift as saying the record is “the most sonically cohesive album we’ve ever made” and “her favorite record yet.”
It is “influenced by late-’80s pop and what that time period meant to the culture,” said Swift.
Shortly after the release of her new track, Taylor Swift performed “Shake it Off” to an enthused audience at the VMA’s.
The performance was 20’s themed and featured many of the awkward dance moves that have become somewhat of a signature for Swift.
And while the Huffington Post writes that Miley Cyrus wasn’t feeling the show, “haters gonna hate,” and Swift is “gonna shake, shake it off.”
