Revealing costumes leave women with limited choices

During the month of October, female college students are focused on one thing: finding the perfect Halloween costume.

While women are offered a variety of options when it comes to their costumes, the one common problem is that they are all usually provocative and revealing.

However, college-aged women continue to buy these costumes year after year. If you find yourself at a college party on the weekend of Halloween, you will see anything from a sexy nurse to a Playboy bunny.

“I feel that even if I wanted to wear a less revealing costume, the stores don’t really sell that,” said junior Shahrazad Lama.

One of the major issues is that unless you have the time to put together a homemade costume, your options from the costume store become very limited, both in terms of creativity and modesty.

The costume stores seem to make every potential Halloween costume “sexy.” Even Disney’s “Frozen” characters have been transformed to be perceived as sexy and provocative instead of innocent and childish.

Although these costumes may be somewhat degrading, women still continue to buy them. It’s such a natural impulse in our generation that most shoppers don’t even think twice about it.

In the movie “Mean Girls,” it is said that Halloween is one of the only nights women can dress as provocatively as they want and it is completely acceptable. Surprisingly, this theme has persevered over the years. Almost any costume is acceptable for the night: all you need is sexy lingerie paired with some sort of animal ears.

Senior Quinn Raseman believes that this theme won’t die out any time soon.

“Even if there wasn’t a limited Halloween costume selection women would still wear the same provocative costumes,” Raseman said.

If you are having trouble finding a modest Halloween costume in stores, online costume websites, such as halloweenexpress.com, have a lot more options for adult costumes that aren’t as revealing.

Even Party City, whose costume aisle for women only offers revealing outfits, has some more conservative options on their website. If you are still unhappy with your choices, a homemade costume can always be a creative and comfortable option. Just look to your closet to make an affordable and easy costume out of what you already have. Some examples could include dressing up as a hippy, a flapper, a princess, a pirate and more.
