“If/Then, a new musical featuring Idina Menzel, has proven to be a praiseworthy addition to Broadway.
The play explores the theme of choice and fate when the protagonist has to choose between love and becoming the a successful businesswoman.
Recently divorced, 38-year-old Elizabeth moves to New York City to start a new life after living in Arizona for 12 years.
She runs into her best friends Kate (LaChanze) and Lucas (Anthony Rapp) in Madison Square Park, where she must decide which direction to go in to create her new life in the city. She must choose either Kate or Lucas.
When she first chooses to go along with her best friend Kate, a lesbian and kindergarten teacher, she has the opportunity to meet other people and date again.
Kate and her girlfriend Anne (Jenn Colella) even help Liz get a phone number on the subway.
As the next act started, a silhouette was put center-stage on Elizabeth where time is now reversed and she speaks, “I choose Lucas!”
Now Elizabeth joins her bisexual best friend from college on an adventure to become a businesswoman in city planning.
After joining a protest event she has the opportunity to take on a new city project, and meets other people who work in the same business.
This musical shows how life can provide you with so many choices and chances, with a completely original approach. Idina Menzel’s performance truly shows that no matter what road you choose to take all the possibilities will somehow all come together in one beautiful life story.
The moral of the story that can be taken away from this musical performance is that, whatever is meant to be will be, just maybe not how you plan it.
As the cast took their final curtain call bow, the audience quickly stood to give them a standing ovation.
The musical was a perfect blend of risk, adventure, regrets and romance.
Barricades with screaming fans anxiously waiting for the cast to come out and sign Playbills surrounded the stage door. When actor Anthony Rapp opened the door the crowd went crazy.
When he was asked to give advice to musical theater college students Rapp said, “My advice would be to never stop following your dreams, it’s never too late to make them a reality.”
A few other cast members joined in on signing Playbills and taking silly pictures for Instagram with the fans.
“The idea of ‘If/Then is that you have the opportunity to start your life over every single day with the choices that you make,” said Idina Menzel, in an article on Broadway.com.
One inspiring thing to look forward to in the show is that no matter who you are, you can relate to similar situations and find yourself within the show.
The musical reaches all ages, whether you’re a preteen or a senior citizen.
