#TBT Horror Movie: ‘Scream’
October 29, 2015
As Halloween approaches, many people are re-watching old horror movie classics to celebrate the season. “Scream” is just one of these popular choices.
“Scream” is a modern horror film released in 1996. The movie is a satirical film that includes elements from other famous horror movies, such as “Friday the 13th.”
The town of Woodsboro is shaken up by the recent murder of Casey (Drew Barrymore) and her boyfriend Steve.
Sidney (Campbell), is recovering from the rape and murder of her mother a year prior. She leans on her friends Tatum, Stu and Randy for support. Her boyfriend Billy (Skeet Ulrich) is also helping her cope.
Gale Weathers (Cox) is a news reporter, who has come to Woodsboro to cover the murders and the anniversary of Sidney’s mother’s murder. Tatum’s brother, Deputy Dewey Riley (Arquette), is patrolling the town and protecting Sidney and her friends.
Sidney is attacked by the murderer and finds Billy at the scene. She accuses him of the murder and he is taken into police custody.
Billy is released the next day and the blame for the murders shift to Sidney’s father Neil. The phone calls made by the murderer have been linked to Neil’s phone. Shortly after these events, the school board decides to close the school for a week. When all of the students leave, the principal becomes the third victim of the murders.
Stu decides to throw a party to celebrate the week off of school. Tatum is murdered at this party without anyone knowing. Most of the students leave after hearing about the murder of the principal on the television.
Sidney and Billy reconcile until Billy is presumably killed, making Sidney go into panic mode. However, Billy stumbles down the stairs and shoots Randy. It is then revealed that Billy is the killer, and Stu is his accomplice. They planned to murder Sidney and to frame Sidney’s father, who was being held captive, for the murder of herself and her mother.
Sidney fights back and ends up killing both Billy and Stu. Gale Weathers ends the film by making a live TV report of the night’s events.
The opening scene of Casey’s murder has become an iconic scene in modern movie history. Casey was taunted before her murder with horror movie trivia. She ends up getting one question wrong, which resulted in the death of her boyfriend, and ultimately, herself.
In an interview with “Entertainment Weekly,” Barrymore admitted that she was offered the lead role of Sidney Prescott in the beginning. She declined and insisted on playing Casey because the role reminded her of a famous scene in “When A Stranger Calls.”
There have been three sequels made to “Scream.” The most recent film, “Scream 4” was released in 2010. This film includes many of today’s biggest celebrities, such as Emma Roberts from “American Horror Story.”
Although it may be nearly twenty years since the original film came out, “Scream” is one of those movies everyone must see this Halloween season.
