‘Stranger Things’ continues to offer glimpses into second season

Netflix’s massively popular original series, Stranger Things, ended its first season on an intense note. Because it left those watching with a handful of cliffhangers, fans have been scrambling for more information. The show aired a trailer for its second season during the Super Bowl, and more information has come out since.

The Super Bowl ad seemed innocuous enough for the first few seconds, as it started with a vintage “L’eggo my Eggo!” commercial. As soon as the first cut to static occurred, however, fans knew immediately what the commercial was really about.

In the trailer, the Eggo commercial is interrupted by a spinning arcade sign in a red sky. Then there’s more static, a cut to Eleven’s favorite food, and some mysterious lights before fans got a shot of the psychokinetic protagonist opening her eyes, nose bloodied…Upside Down.

The nostalgia everyone loved from the first season returns with a shot of the boys on their bikes dressed as the Ghostbusters, complete with proton packs. Everyone’s favorite police chief, Hopper, is seen menacingly stabbing downward with a shovel and a mysterious scientist is shown in a hazmat suit.

Bringing back Will’s passion for drawing, the trailer shows a sketch of an arachnid-looking monster. El is seen clutching her head, crouched in a corner, before fans see Will in his house, and as the door slowly creaks open, the spider-looking creature is seen outlined in by a red sky. The trailer’s message? “The world is turning upside down.”

The trailer also announced that the release date will be on Halloween. In addition, since the trailer premiered, Netflix has been constantly releasing new information.

The full original cast will be returning, along with newcomers Sadie Sink, who is set to play thirteen year old Max; Dacre Montgomery, known for being the new Red Ranger in the upcoming Power Rangers reboot, will play Max’s stepbrother; and Linnea Berthelson will take on the unknown role of Roman. Actor Brett Gelman, from “Fleabag” and the Matthew Perry sitcom “Go On,” will be playing “a disgraced journalist turned conspiracy theorist who is investigating a cold case” in the Indiana town the series takes place in, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Adding to the nostalgia factor, stars of two huge ‘80s movies will join the cast: Paul Reiser from “Aliens” and Sean Astin of “The Goonies.”

Nine episode titles have also been released: “Madmax,” “The Boy Who Came Back to Life,” “The Pumpkin Patch,” “The Palace,” “The Storm,” “The Pollywog,” “The Secret Cabin,” “The Brain” and “The Lost Brother.”

Many speculate that the new season will take place around Halloween based on the boys’ Ghostbuster costumes. The new season will in fact take place in late 1984, one year after the first season’s events, the creators Matt and Ross Duffer confirmed. While interviews and trailers can only spoil so much about the new season, there are only nine months to go until all is revealed.
