The real spring breakers: the truth behind the myths

We all dream of that perfect spring break getaway to somewhere warm and exhilarating. We dream about somewhere where you can sit on a beach chair under the sun worrying only about your tan and not on a desk chair under a lamp worrying about your next test. Our favorite spring break films portray people mingling by the pool and finding an incredible adventure people by the pool. If you think about it, we’ve all met reality by now and it isn’t so picture perfect.

Most students can agree on how the media glorifies spring break. Whether you’ve experienced the movie worthy spring break stories or have simply stayed home, the truth of the matter is not everyone will gaze at the sunset on the beach or road trip down the East coast with a group of friends, and this is okay. If a spring break spent at home hanging with friends sounds good to you, then call up your best friend and start planning.  Ultimately, spring break isn’t as perfect as the world perceives it to be. People will stay at home and do nothing, while others will go on vacation. Spring break is what you make of it.

Here at Iona I interviewed 5 students to get the truth about Spring Break:

What are you doing this spring break?

“I’m staying at Iona for rowing.” Daylin Salas, Sophomore

“I’m staying home and working unfortunately.” Tevan Costoso, Sophomore

“I’m going on a trip to Disney World with my best friend.” Michaela Weidtman, Sophomore

“I’m going to North Carolina to visit a friend who goes to school there.” Emily Kanter, Junior

“I think I’m just going to hang out with friends and my boyfriend and probably just stay at home on Long Island.” Alyssa Pammer, Freshman

What is your dream spring break getaway?

“My dream spot would be Turks and Caicos.” Daylin Salas, Sophomore

“The Dream spring break for me would be Rio De Janeiro because who doesn’t want to go to Rio.” Tevan Costoso, Sophomore

“Dream spring break getaway would have to be either a road trip through the U.S, a week of backpacking Europe, or the Bahamas.” Michaela Weidtman, Sophomore

“I would say somewhere tropical.”  Emily Kanter, Junior

“I really want to go to Italy because I’m Italian and it looks beautiful in the spring.” Alyssa Pammer, Freshman

How do you think society and movies portray spring break? Is it a fairytale or reality?

“Movies portray spring break like it’s a drinking free-for-all. Most of the time it’s in Miami, at an outdoor concert on the beach. It’s not always like that in reality. Last spring break I stayed at home watching Netflix.”  Daylin Salas, Sophomore

“It’s kind of like a fairytale because society sees spring break as a whole week of partying and drinking at awesome places like Florida or Cancun. I know a couple of people who are from Miami and all they do during break is go to the beach and sleep.” Tevan Costoso, Sophomore

“ I’d say it more of a fairytale. Society views spring break like ‘Project X’ but on vacation.” Michaela Weidtman, Sophomore

“Well it’s both fairytale and reality, I mean it’s my first time going somewhere for spring break and I usually stay home but I think it’s 50/50 because if you actually go to Cancun for instance, it’s insane because of what we see on social media. Next year I’m going to experience that.” Emily Kanter, Junior

“It’s a fairytale. Society makes you think that spring break is all about parties and vacations but in reality for most of us it’s just a chill time at home. ” Alyssa Pammer, Freshman
