‘Truman the Album’ lacks ability to compete in R&B world
April 12, 2017
R&B singer Trey Songz released his seventh studio album, titled “Tremaine the Album,” on March 24.
There was hope that “Tremaine the Album,” respectfully named after the singer’s birth name, could be ranked with other classic R&B albums such as Usher’s “Confessions” and Mariah Carey’s “Emancipation of Mimi.” With the success of his previous albums like “Trigga” and “Passion, Pain and Pleasure,” this album was expected to be nothing short of amazing. Sadly, “Tremaine the Album” did not live up to the hype.
The line from the song “#1Fan” perfectly sums up the album—“I don’t want to do too much.” Not only did Songz not do too much, he did not do enough.
“Tremaine the Album” was not upbeat or soothing. Songz is a talented artist and has a strong fan base, but when you are in competition with other R&B singers such as Chris Brown, August Alsina and Zayn Malik, you must prove that you are better than the rest. It takes more than good looks and a pretty smile to capture attention—you must show that you have vocal ability.
On this new album, Songz showed lackluster vocals as well as a poor writing ability and concept. Similar to his past albums, many of the songs found on “Tremaine the Album” deal with topics of promiscuity, finding love and bedroom antics. That being said, there are so many times these topics can be discussed before they become boring.
The constant hypocrisy he shows throughout “Tremaine the Album” is pretty concerning. For example, in his song “Playboy,” he talks about how he no longer wants to deal with his womanizing ways. On several other tracks, such as “Animal,” he boasts about his bachelor lifestyle.
The repetitiveness of his music is becoming dull. Instead of exciting audiences, he is becoming a cliché act. Songz has lost his flare when it comes to capturing the heart, mind and soul of his listeners, and his weak vocals do not help.
There is not much to praise about this album. Hopefully Songz will learn from his mistakes and put out content that gives fans the classic R&B flavor he claims to have.
