Former Gael to perform at 54 Below with ‘Broadway Baes’

Iona College alumnus Tyler Conroy will be performing at 54 Below in New York City on May 20.

Conroy’s show, “Tyler Conroy and his Broadway Baes,” will feature some of his his favorite Broadway performers—or as he refers to them, his “Baes”—who will sing some of his favorite musical theatre songs. He will also perform some of his original music.

Conroy went from singing his order at the Taco Bell drive-thru in his web-series, “TyvidTuesday,” to now singing with his favorite Broadway stars.

“54 Below reached out to me and asked if I wanted to do a show in their venue, which I’ve been dreaming about playing there for the last three years,” Conroy said in an email. “They told me I had the space for 75 minutes and could do whatever I want. I emailed 54 Below back with this crazy idea: ‘What if we called the show ‘Tyler Conroy & His Broadway Baes’ and I asked some of my favorite baes to sing with me?’ They LOVED the idea and then I started freaking out at the thought that this dream of mine singing with Broadway actors could become a very real reality.”

The show will feature talents such as Daniel Quadrino from “Wicked” and “Newsies” and Conroy’s favorite, Matt Doyle from “Spring Awakening” and “Sweeney Todd.”

“The first bae to say yes was Matt Doyle—who is my favorite bae and honestly I would’ve been fine if he was the only one who said yes because he is my Broadway Super Hero,” Conroy said.

Tyler Conroy decided to take advantage of his web-series and asked the musical theatre stars to perform with him in the best way he knew how—through a video.

“First off—I was terrified to release the video,” Conroy explained. “I had the video all set to go LIVE and I waited a week to launch it because once it was out there, it was out there. Within an hour of posting it, I had three of the seven baes I called out in the video reply back saying they would sing with me.”

Conroy took advantage of social media and continues to connect to the performers through Twitter.

“I mainly used Twitter as the platform for this, and then my followers were tweeting at the baes with a link to the video,” Conroy said. “And it was all becoming real and I was sitting on my couch in the fetal position just watching all the tweets coming through from people who were trying to help get the baes to say yes.”

He is most excited to show people that he is more than “just this guy who sings and talks about his church of Taylor Swift and Taco Bell.”

Conroy shared the biggest lesson he has learned from this experience:

“No matter how crazy you think your ideas may be—if it makes you happy and you want it more than anything, show the universe how hard you’re willing to work and it will become reality,” Conroy said.
