Iona vs. Binghamton preview: Gaels look to get back in the win column
September 3, 2017
The Iona College women’s soccer team looks to jump back into the win column against Binghamton on Sunday at Mazella Field.
The Gaels are coming off a 1-0 loss to Albany, one of their best games of the season. Iona played a tight defensive game and dominated the second half and look to build off this.
The only goal was by the Great Danes junior Mariah Williams on a penalty shot in the 16th minute. Iona outplayed Albany for most of the game, especially in the second half when the team only allowed four total shots.
The Gaels did a good job of keeping the ball in Albany’s end of the field by applying a lot of offensive pressure late in the game, nearly scoring multiple times down the stretch.
Iona midfielders junior Mariana Jaramillo sophomore and Mariah Elsenheimer led the offensive charge in the final minutes, both having great open looks.
Jaramillo led the team with five total shots and Elsenheimer almost buried a top shelf shot late.
Binghamton comes to New Rochelle with a 3-1-1 record, but lost to Fairfield 2-1 in double overtime on Friday.
The Bearcats have applied a lot of offensive pressure so far this season, averaging 17.6 shots per game and a .545 shot on goal percentage.
In a five game total Binghamton has shot 88 total shots, 48 shot on goal and nine goals.
Binghamton has also played well defensively, only giving up 10.2 shots a game, but give up a lot of shots on goal to their opponents with a shot on goal allowed percentage of .627. Binghamton averages 1.80 goals per game, but allows 1.40 goals.
Here are the players to watch:
Iona:
Junior Mariana Jaramillo (Midfielder)- Jaramillo has eight total shots in her last two games, and led the team with five against Albany. Jaramillo has good chances against Albany, and looks to find the back of the net against the Bearcats and their high shots on goal allowed percentage.
Binghamton:
Redshirt junior Kayla Saager- Saager has done it all for the Bear Cats so far. Saager has tallied a total of 10 points, with three goals and four assists. Saager average 6.40 shots a game, including 10 shots against Fairfield.
