With October sadly approaching its final week, I figured it would be good to look back on some of this year’s best horror movies. The following can all be accessed through HBO MAX or Netflix.
- “Sinners”: The latest collaboration between director Ryan Coogler and Micheal B. Jordan (with others including “Black Panther” and the “Creed” trilogy), “Sinners” dominated the movie-sphere, garnering endorsements from the likes of Tom Cruise and Kevin Bacon. “Sinners” tells the story of twin brothers Stack and Smoke (both portrayed by Jordan) returning to their Mississippi hometown for a fresh start, only to discover a great evil awaiting them. The best way I can describe “Sinners” to horror fans is a more elevated version of “From Dusk Til Dawn”. Jordan plays the dual role excellently, particularly when everything goes south and he has to quite literally fight himself. A must watch, Sinners is now streaming on HBO MAX.
- “Final Destination: Bloodlines”: The most recent entry of the “Final Destination” series also happens to be its best. As its title suggests, this film explores what happens if the curse of death transcends generations within a family. With 2025 technology in its favor, “Bloodlines” features the best kills of the whole series, with some comic relief to balance it out. The character of Eric had my friends and I cackling in the theater. “Final Destination: Bloodlines” is also streaming on HBO MAX.
- “28 Years Later”: The third film of the “28 (x) later” series, “28 Years Later” is set the titular amount of time after the rage virus first infected society. Now, a group of survivors remains isolated on a remote island. When one, a resourceful young boy named Spike, manages to escape, he discovers a mutation that has spread not only to the infected, but other survivors as well. While not reaching the heights of the original film, “28 Years Later” is an enjoyable enough ride. Danny Boyle fills the director’s chair well, with interesting visuals throughout. The film is also complete with a head-scratcher of an ending that has everybody talking. “28 Years Later” is now streaming on Netflix.
- “I Know What You Did Last Summer”: Speaking of movies with divisive endings, “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is the legacy sequel (or requel) to the 1997 slasher film of the same name. Much like that film, the 2025 rendition is extremely cheesy, but still delivers enough thrills and kills. In fact, it is my contention that the Fisherman was actually far more intimidating this time around! Madelyn Cline is perhaps the only standout of the new cast, but the return of Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt as survivors Ray and Julie (as well as a couple surprise cameos) add a nice, nostalgic touch. Though, the latter does remark “nostalgia’s overrated.” The movie received mixed reviews upon release, in large part for its aforementioned conclusion that had the horror community in a frenzy, but thankfully, I was able to shut my brain off and have a good time with this lean, mean horror flick. “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is now streaming on Netflix.
