The sports world is one that is always changing. From big trades to hot streaks to injuries, the world of sports is known for its unpredictability. This column is meant to recap some key stories in that world.
The last issue of “The Ionian” previewed the Major League Soccer Cup quarterfinal matchup between the New York Red Bulls and New York City FC. A hyped-up matchup that was the biggest “Hudson River Derby” in the almost decade-long existence of the game, the one game on Nov. 23 would be the only game to decide which New York team would head to the MLS Cup semifinals.
The New York Red Bulls would go up early, as a Felipe Carballo shot in the 16th minute would put them up, 1-0. That and another goal in the 25th minute from Dante Vanzeir would lead the Red Bulls to victory and the MLS Cup semifinals, 2-0. They would clash with Orlando City in the MLS Cup semifinals, with that game taking place on Nov. 30. The game would be much closer, with the Red Bulls winning 1-0 off of a 47th minute goal from Andres Reyes.
The Red Bulls would face the 5-time MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy in the final of the MLS Cup. A match-up between two of the MLS’ founding clubs, if the Galaxy won, it would be their record sixth title and if the Red Bulls won, it would be their first MLS Cup win. Unfortunately, the Red Bulls wouldn’t be able to go all the way. The LA Galaxy, who were the second seed on the western side of the bracket, were able to win their sixth MLS Cup, 2-1.
